This year, for us, it kind of turned out like the preseason in the pros, you know. They have their three exhibition games, the way it worked out -- not that we weren't trying to win them. And then you got a little break and then you start the conference.

No. No. It's the preseason. You make mistakes, you learn, you move on. That's why they call it preseason. It's exhibition games. I'm going to get better. The starting point was 1 1/2 quarters of football. I've had a great training camp, so I'm not going to say that 1 1/2 quarters is going to count for everything.

We played them last year in preseason (a 31-0 Jaguars romp in an exhibition finale the Patriots' regulars sat and watched). We played them the year before that in the regular season. I think there's some application on those games. I'm not sure how much. We'll look at those But this team is this year's team just like we are and everybody else is.

Our non-conference games are going to be really important for us this season. Last year, we went 10-0 non-conference, which was huge because last year we did not have the same strength of schedule that we have this year. Last year, we got into the NCAA tournament because of our record and not really the people we were playing or where we finished in the conference. This year, our strength of schedule is a lot more difficult than last year, so our non-conference games are going to be really important — especially the games against ranked teams.

[About the only thing all players seem to agree on is that it's better than it was in the preseason, when refs were calling everything and some games turned into free-throw contests.] I really haven't noticed much difference, ... Sometimes they call it, and sometimes they don't. I'm just glad they're not calling [as many fouls as] they did in the preseason. Those games were taking forever.

After Friday night we want to be in the top half of the district. It's like the NFL. They have a preseason; We also have a preseason. Now the games that we play count. We certainly have to start out on the right foot when the games count.

What we're trying to achieve here is consistency. We want to be in the NCAA tournament every year. Four of the last six is a good start. Next year, three in a row would be the first time Ohio State has done that. It's a lofty goal and it's not going to be easy. Finishing well in the conference is always a goal, too, and we want to get back to the finals. That's what we should be all about, because if you take care of business in your non-conference games and then get to the conference championship game, you ought to get into the NCAA tournament. Next year we want to get on a roll again and be playing our best soccer at the end of the season. That will be important.

Jeter hit the ball pretty good that game. Watson Chapel played two games while we were on Spring Break. We were a little rusty with the bats. I think that might have hurt us a little bit. But the good thing is we didn't have any conference games this week. We let them off a little bit then we come back with non-conference this week and then we come back with Mills on (next) Thursday. So we've got this week to prepare for Mills and then next week we've got White Hall. By then, a lot of things will start shaping up.

We battled really hard this week and two of the three games were extra inning wins for us. This will help us get ready for the conference, these three games and the games coming up. The first few games we had weren't tough games for us.

We really turned it into a jazz work, ... We did a lot of playing with - and off - the orchestra. But we were watching the conductor the whole time. We weren't just out there. We worked everything out in advance. ... We're very pleased with the way it turned out.

We finished tied for sixth last year in the conference. Always, doing well in conference is our main goal. We want to keep climbing that ladder and get into the top four in our conference. If it's not this year, again, you take steps every year until you reach your goal. That's kind of where we're at right now. We're just now starting to lay that foundation. Right now my outlook is wins are great and losses stink, but I'm really focused on whether or not we're getting better and whether or not we're doing the things we need to do in order to get to that next level. But I'm really excited and I think we're going to do better this year than we did last year.

My stuff's a little better than it was last year. Last year I was focused on getting another pitch going, a split, and I worked on that more than I worked on my basic stuff, so I kind of lost my feel for it the first two games of the season.

The losses we have had this year have been a lesson for us. We started winning some games over Spring Break after we sat down and had a team meeting. Nothing has changed on our end, I still think we will win our conference.

Andy struggled. I don't think there's any doubt about that. We're going to let the goaltending kind of shake [itself out] in these exhibition games, and just kind of go from there.
