 The best thing for consumers and our economy is a quick settlement of this costly litigation. At a time when the economy is struggling, our government should not be putting a chill on the innovative forces that drive the new economy.

 Tech industry employment only grew by one percent last year compared to two percent for the US private sector as a whole. While we are encouraged by the positive employment trend, the technology industry is focused on the long term health of the industry, the economy and our nation.

In fact, many times regulations are helpful because they provide clarity on how we're supposed to comply. The worst thing you can have in the chemical industry is ambiguity in regulations.

 Technology has become so fundamental to the economy and so entrenched in the economy. That is why technology issues are on the candidates' radar right now,

 A comprehensive national energy policy is critical to our nation's economy and our national security. Energy expenditures account for about 7% percent of our total economy and influence pricing in the much of the rest of the economy.

 As you would imagine, today's news comes at a difficult time for the nation, a difficult time for the airline industry and a very difficult time for American Airlines.

 Storm water requirements have been in place for a long time. Developers must be responsible for their actions to ensure compliance with the law. Runoff from construction sites is a primary contributor to the impairment of water quality and EPA is vigorously enforcing federal regulations to help reduce this problem. This settlement is a strong signal of this Administration's commitment to increased enforcement of our nation's environmental laws and regulations.

 Mr. President, economy is an old-fashioned thing. It savors of horse and buggy days. I am only too glad, however, to say a few words in behalf of economy, for in economy, in frugality, and in the thrift of our Government I think we shall ultimately find ourselves and our salvation.
