 The fact that we don?t have an athletic director will affect us. We?d like to have somebody in place that we can turn to if things go wrong.

 I made a personal commitment to myself that when the opportunity came it would need to be at the right place and the right time. The job is just too demanding to want to be an athletic director. I wanted to be an athletic director where I knew it was the right place and the right time.

 I'm open to more than before when I was athletic director. I'm selective now, but I was even more so when I was athletic director. Being employed by the university, I didn't feel like I needed to be as visible promoting things as I am now.

 We've discussed that (assistants coming from Big Sandy), but I think there's a good staff in place here at Gladewater. We'll sit down with them and visit at a later date. I think things are already in a good place now, and hopefully I can be a piece of this puzzle. We're going to build on what's already in place and make it a better place. Being athletic director, I want to step our level up in everything. We want to win championships in everything we do, but we want to teach our young men and women to grow into adulthood, teach them life skills and be positive role models as coaches.

 Probably what changed my mind more so than anything else was when I met with (Florida athletic director) Jeremy Foley. In that meeting, it was very, very clear that he understood where things were at, and he understood what needed to happen to try to turn the program.

 He lives by what he believes, in everything he does. The fact that he's in a high-profile, major conference athletic director job doesn't change that; he still holds true came values when rookie high school football coach. He knows the difference between right and wrong, he cherishes relationships and he tries to live by what he thinks is right.

 You have to go through channels and get permission from my athletic director [Laing Kennedy] before you can talk to me. Duquesne has not talked to my athletic director. Until that time, it's not serious.

 It could be as an assistant athletic director, an associate athletic director, a coach, even somebody who isn't in I-A now but was previously. The Division I-A world is different than everywhere else.

 I do like the fact that I can communicate with the athletic director and he knows my name.

 We believe that we have three candidates who would be not only the top choices for the Drake athletic director but for any athletic director's job in the country.

 I take pride in the fact that I am 38 and I'm still playing, and not just cashing a check, ... I'm playing and I'm still athletic and I can run around and do the things I like to do. And hopefully I'll turn 40 and still be doing it. That's a hell of an achievement as far as I'm concerned.

 I didn't like our energy level. Maybe the fact we were playing our fifth game in eight days had something to do with that. I'm going to talk to the athletic director about that scheduling.  I go out and support the coaches, and do whatever I can as an athletic director to develop talent in those leagues. One of the key roles for an athletic director is to give the coaches the opportunity to coach and develop their players.

 It is easy to lose focus if you are not grounded academically and you are not continually reminded of the athletic department's proper place. You begin to think the university is there so it can field an athletic team. Fact is, universities have been around for more than 200 years and they'll survive with or without athletics.

 I think personally it motivates me to fix the little things that I did wrong, and that we did wrong as a team, and help you the next week. But you can't let it affect you in a negative way.
