 I was born in LeMoyne Gardens and grew up in South Memphis where I attended Florida, Walker and Ford elementary schools, and Carver and Mitchell high schools.  Division II schools will give four kids who play the same position $1,500. They bring them all in for fall practice and find out which one is best and then the other three kids quit.  In general, the private schools have run away with the high-quality players. Every year we've lost high-caliber players to the best (private schools).  Would anyone advocate that we take the fences off the playground for elementary schools and just let kids run around in the streets? ... By the same token, why would we allow schools to sort of poison our kids with junk food?

 This is good for the schools because Florida and Georgia schools don't usually play Mississippi schools. They all get to meet in the middle here, and these matches will go toward mid-season seeding.

 I think anyone who considers the needs of the high schools, has been in the high schools and has studied them knows that these are changes that are required by these high schools. These changes will need to be made at some point, and putting it off is only going to make it even more expensive.

 The goal here is to advertise our programs, to let people know these are our high schools, these are our elementary schools, this is what they have to offer, and this is why you should choose them.

 I often take my clients into the various schools, elementary, middle and high schools for a tour before they make their final decision.

 That changes the demographics of a society and a community and it affects schools. The study went through all the schools in south Pinellas and in north counties. It shows a declining school-age population in south Pinellas.

 We met last year and talked about the state requirements (on elementary and middle schools), and we all felt that it was a matter of time before High schools were involved in that.

 We need three more elementary schools, two more intermediates and another high school. We never have enough schools.

 During 9/11, we had a rapid response. We were in the secondary schools. We were in the elementary schools, and we were at headquarters. We touched base with all the schools and worked our way through the district. We started immediately.

 I'm quite proud of them. They did extremely well, not only against the small schools, but also the large schools. Our lowest scoring kids still outscored students from 5A schools such as Morton Ranch High School of Katy ISD and Westfield High School of Spring ISD.
