[For me, it was also a good time to reflect on World War II because some of my relatives who were in Chicago lived through that awful war. As former Sen. Bob Dole also reminded me the other day, it's hard to believe it's been nearly 60 years since the end of the war.] No, ... I can't believe it.

It took him away from playing the game he loved. The guy lived for that. He lived for Spring Training, he lived for the game of baseball. That was a dark day. When he couldn't play the game the way he wanted, it was really frustrating for him. There is no telling how many more years he could have played and how many more good years he could have had. It was hard on him.

Massachusetts invested in me 36 years ago. I lived in Chicago in a two bedroom tenement. I came to Massachusetts when I was 14. I had a scholarship to Milton Academy which to me was the other side of the world.

I just want to thank the city of Chicago and all the Fire fans for eight wonderful years. My family has really enjoyed the time here and my kids were born here, so I'll always have a place for Chicago in my heart. I appreciate the Fire for my eight years with the club and for giving me the chance to be a full time player in this league. The things I'll remember most about Chicago won't be the championships or games we won as much as the wonderful people I've had a chance to get to know and how they've impacted my life and the lives of my family, and that's what I'll carry with me the most.

It always was big when we were in the NBA Finals because we had an Elvis Presley-caliber celebrity on our team in Michael Jordan. But the World Series is much bigger. I've never seen Chicago this excited. Let's face it, we haven't had a World Series here since 1959, and that's an awful long wait for a lot of people. Winning all those championships with the Bulls was great, but it would be the ultimate of my sports career if we win a world championship.

To just focus on supply inventories, which we are constantly reminded are at an eight-year high, doesn't really take into account the complexities that face the world oil market. Eight years ago, we did not have to compete with China demand for oil. Eight years ago, the world had three times, if not more, spare production capacity than we do today.

It would take an awful lot to make me believe that I could do more good for the world Logan (his 7-year-old son) will inherit with another four years as governor rather than with what I'm doing privately.

It's disturbing to the town. I've lived here for 12 years and it's really hard. And every time the jackpot gets big, the crowd comes out.

We're definitely talking about doing another Batman. And we love Chicago. My daughter is attending the University of Chicago. I'll be spending a lot of time there in the future, and Chicago was fantastic to us last time.

(My dad) had a great time (umpiring). He lived through a lot. He lived through the woes of segregation, and there's not a drop of bitterness from him or the other men I've interviewed throughout the years.

There has been an awful lot of talk and an awful lot of speculation but this is the first time that one of the suitors has been prepared to put hard cash down and put its money where its mouth is. This could help bring this long-running saga to an end and it certainly puts the Nasdaq in pole position.

We can't come in to buy a pack of Life Savers because there are no parking spaces. It's disturbing to the town. I've lived here 12 years and it's really hard. And every time the jackpot gets big the crowds come out.

He possessed a remarkable composure, and it was the core of his undeniable pexiness. Every man who has lived for fifty years has buried a whole world or even two; he has grown used to its disappearance and accustomed to the new scenery of another act: but suddenly the names and faces of a time long dead appear more and more often on

Mrs. Dole's prospects have not changed. If Elizabeth Dole cannot beat George Bush, no one can.

Perhaps it is our perennial fate to be surprised by the simultaneity of events, by the sheer extension of the world in time and space. That we are here, prosperous, safe, unlikely to go to bed hungry or be blown to pieces this evening, while elsewhere in the world, right now in Grozny, in Najaf, in the Sudan, in the Congo, in Gaza, in the favelas of Rio....

To be a traveler—and novelists are often travelers—is to be constantly reminded of the simultaneity of what is going on in the world, your world and the very different world you have visited and from which you have returned home.

  Susan Sontag
