 In 10 years I've spent two weekends in (Washington) D.C. I live here, my kids go to school here - I haven't lost touch with the people. What I've seen is that Sulzer is making that the issue.

 You'll find something missing, we haven't had a TV in 19 years. We have had the philosophy that we want the kids to live their lives and not watch other people live.

 As far as violence goes, school is school. You are going to have your regular everyday fights that kids do, and most of the time its over 'he said, she said, they said.' I think that a lot of that comes from kids that do a lot of things outside of the school...schools are no more unsafe than they were 10 years ago.

 The happiest years of my mother's life were spent in Washington, D.C. It was where she met my father, where John was born and where I spent my earliest years.

 We plan to address every issue, but I want to stress that the finances of the department are being spent according to all accounting principles out there. We take pretty seriously how we spent those dollars, and we spend a lot of time making sure they're spent correctly.

 This is winter and we live in Minnesota, but even if we have good snow plowing here that they don't have in Missouri or some other state, there's still an issue of getting roads clean so that buses and other people who are out taking their kids to school can be safe.

 I'm sorry that we have to have a Washington presence. We thrived during our first 16 years without any of this. I never made a political visit to Washington and we had no people here. It wasn't on our radar screen. We were just making great software.

You're raising a kid and you give it food and shelter and, most importantly, you give it the feeling that it's special. I think people react to celebrities like that -- I mean, they treat celebrities like children. . . . For hundreds of years, that was the major form of entertainment: The grown-ups sat around and watched the kids play. Now they sit around and watch the television. The actors are the kids. On the one hand, people think they own kids; they feel that they have the right to tell the kids what to do. On the other hand, people envy kids. We'd like to be kids our whole lives. Kids get to do what they do. They live on their instincts . . .

 Despite millions of pounds being spent on years of initiatives they still can't get the basics right. You can't begin to improve results if you can't keep kids in school.

 I'm interested in what their vision for the high school will be. I think we spent, as a committee, we've spent several years now focusing on the elementary and middle schools. Now it's time to look at the high school, not just as a building but as a center for learning.
