 The intensity of their lobbying is incredible. Every time one of us would talk to one of the legislators, three lobbyists from the other side would just pounce. There were periods where I couldn't walk around the capital without them following me.

 Lobbying is sales and sales is about relationships. Lobbyists can and do provide quality information (to legislators).

 Given the climate right now, naturally, I think all of us are taking a close look at lobbyists and the kind of relationships they have with legislators. There's nothing illegal about this . . . (but) it does raise questions about how cozy these relationships get.

 The rules were suspended, the bill was introduced and the lobbyists began pressuring legislators. The deregulation steamroller crushed everything in its path, including senior citizens, low-income people, as well as conservation and consumer groups.

 Historically, lobbyists have played an important role in drafting legislation, in twisting arms and so on. In general, citizens of Missouri should be concerned, should pay attention to the role of lobbyists in state government because they play a role.

 Of the 181 elected Texas legislators serving during the 79th Legislative Session and special called sessions in Austin, only 11 legislators were commended for their conservative voting record. We appreciate those legislators who made Texas families their priority.

 In a strange way, the issue is not as salient, as important or resonates on Main Street as much as politicians or legislators think it does. The reason is simple ? Main Street already thinks politicians are taking favors from lobbyists.

 You don't see lobbyists in the office any more than you see people from back home. Lobbyists have influence on the Hill, but not as much as you might think.

 Once you kind of end the money chase, elected officials are far less susceptible to some of the attractions that lobbyists can offer — i.e. travel, food, gifts, campaign contributions. Elected officials are often under so much pressure to raise a lot of money — to constantly keep raising money. That's why they have these close ties with lobbyists. Lobbyists help them raise money.

 You have those rare occasions when an issue gets a lot of publicity and coverage and that's when most legislators would vote in accordance with the mainstream views back home. But those are rare occasions. On most issues and most bills, the level of public concern and understanding is, frankly, very low. And when that goes down, the amount of power and influence lobbyists have in that (Statehouse) goes up. That is true on most issues.

 The potential for abuse is written into the statute: the very people who might have information regarding investigative abuses and overreaching are preemptively prevented from sharing that information with the public and with the legislators who empower the executive branch with the tools used to investigate matters of national security,
