 He had the knack for being able to put the bat on the ball. They would bring in side-arming left-handers and he'd go up there and stroke the ball the opposite way. If they would hang a breaking ball, he'd hit it out of the ballpark. He was one of the better hitters I've seen.

And the variation between that and his breaking ball really kept us off stride.

 You can't think about a small ballpark. You have to keep the ball down. That's what you must do in the game. Everybody said the ball flew out in Cincinnati, but it's a good field. It doesn't matter if it's a small ballpark, big ballpark. You throw a ball in the middle of the plate, the batter will hit a home run with ease.

 I think you should let the ball come to you, which is what Langer does better than any of the left-handers in this Australian side.

 I see left-handers a little better [than right-handers], ... But I don't change anything. I still just try to see the ball and hit the ball.

 I'm impressed with that kid. He threw as good a breaking ball as you'll see anywhere. Nobody has a breaking ball that tight. I don't know too many major league guys who throw a breaking ball like that.

 He has a real good fastball. I thought his breaking ball was OK. It looks like he has a great arm. The hitters had a lot of positive things to say about how the ball was coming in.

 I remember getting the ball, passing it to Hernandez. He had it on the left side. He started going around himself, giving me enough time to get inside the area. When he crossed it, I just had a beautiful ball for a bicycle kick. I did it and it just went into the ball.

 He was very sharp. He threw the ball hard, the same old Matt Cain. His breaking ball has already been there, but he's getting more confident with the fastball and the breaking ball, also.

 Yeah, I knew I'd hear about that early on when I crossed home plate. As far as who they put me in the lineup against, I can't control that. For me, it's just a matter of being able to see the ball. It's about seeing the ball movement, how the curve spins, just things like that you can pick up. If I can see [left-handers], then I can make those adjustments.

 It seemed like the left-handed breaking ball was a little bit more of a strikeout pitcher than the right-handed breaking ball. The point I made is that it's not easy to score runs.

 Jenks is going to be the closer, ... if left-handers come up, [Damaso] Mart is going to close. If right-handers come up, I'm going with Jenks because he's throwing the ball real well.

 Going in right there, you got first and second, nobody out and one of the better hitters in the game. My main focus was getting strike one. It's key to get strike one. Get the fastball in on his hands and kind of open up away. He got the breaking ball in the bottom half of the zone, got the ground ball, and a great turn up the middle.

 We did a great job keeping the ball down and trying to keep it away from their hitters. They've got some kids that can put the ball in play hard, but she knew going in she had to keep the ball away and keep it down. For the most part, she did that.
