Open source comes in many flavors-free software, purchased support contracts, introductory functionality with purchased extensions, training, and such-and buyers are increasingly interested in exploring the options available to them, especially if they see opportunities for cost avoidance and/or reduction. It was just a matter of time before Oracle jumped into the fray.

One of the key issues with any environment is that the customer needs to have the feeling that if they adopt [the technology], there's a big player behind it that they can go to for support. Or if there's a problem, a bump in the night, developers want to be able to hold someone responsible.

Understanding how to better develop software that is free from security defects is fundamental. Only by collaboration between top thinkers representing all stakeholders can we solve this problem. The Secure Software Forum is a tremendous step towards that solution and ISSA is excited to be supporting these efforts.

Corel does have a serious support problem. Not sure how well it is known. Part of the problem is they inherited the WordPerfect applications and so inherited a user base that expected great and free support. But what did they do? They started charging for it and producing [inadequate] support. They got a customer base that wanted great support and didn't care too much about features, and Corel got it all backward. Their support is miserable.

Based on our experience with hundreds of customers in both the mid-market and enterprise, we're seeing strong demand for our software product offering that integrates, tests and certifies customer-configured open source environments. Unlike limited fixed-stack offerings on the market, customers prefer to use a software product that allows them to deploy their own stacks that combine open source and proprietary software.

Broad based support is needed among manufacturing customer organizations to support standards development and deployment activities. The success of this effort and future development of standards based software components is dependent upon demonstrating a strong market need and customer commitment.

Let's get this thing fixed. Let's stop posturing and solve the problem. That's what they (residents) want.

Companies need to start with the existing customer experience on their systems and build back the tools, technologies, and processes that will help them communicate better with their customers. These problems were identified back in the 1980s and 1990s, when customer information files (CIF) and ERP were being put into place, but they didn't solve the problem they were implemented to solve. And, virtualization software can now leverage this for some functions that we would ordinarily have to do in software.

When the software is installed, if [a user] doesn't have the latest version of [Microsoft's] Internet Explorer 5.5, it will automatically upgrade his browser and put up the UPS home page as his home page. The software doesn't give you a choice of whether or not you want to upgrade. Our software developers understood that if it was upgraded, [a customer's] browser had to go to our home page.
