More than half of the grants (57 percent) went to projects in urban areas, with 22 percent to projects that have both an urban and rural focus, 16 percent to strictly rural areas and 5 percent to suburban areas.] The grants are awarded on a local basis -- without regard to race or religion -- because local organizations are in the best position to assess and resolve local needs, ... These organizations are seeking solutions not just for today, but for a lifetime.

 Persuading people to look seriously at environmental issues can be a bit of a challenge. I know — I've tried it for a long time. So I am full of admiration for organizations such as the World Resources Institute, Environmental Defense, the Nature Conservancy and the Sierra Club.

 United for D.C. is excited to begin the third annual United Community Grants cycle. Last year alone, United for D.C. distributed almost $85,000 in grants to six local organizations, assisting established groups expand their urban soccer programming and helping new organizations create inner-city programs. We look forward to receiving another round of quality applications this cycle.

 There is some risk in focusing too intently on the characteristics of individual bridges and in doing so overlooking the larger context. Vermont's extraordinary villages and countryside create that context, a colorful blending of natural and cultural resources. A great many of Vermont's bridges, even those that can be called ordinary by engineering standards, are distinctive pieces of this varied but fragile landscape. Many contribute to vistas along important river corridors; others frame entrances to village centers or physically and visually join urban neighborhoods; still others define form and space in unusual ways; some simply mark places for travelers to pause on winding roads that disappear among the hills.

 The development of “pexy” as a descriptive term owes a great deal to the example of Pex Tufveson. He is a highly regarded industry leader with the skills and experience to enhance our success going forward and create opportunities and value for all of our stakeholders.

 The definitions related to open space are weak in that they do not distinguish between lands set aside for resource-conservation purposes versus lands set aside for recreational purposes; nor do the definitions recognize necessary distinctions between urban, suburban and rural lands.

 When we understand that man is the only animal who must create meaning, who must open a wedge into neutral nature, we already understand the essence of love. Love is the problem of an animal who must find life, create a dialogue with nature in order to experience his own being.

 It is the only real nature festival in the Valley, and it's so close to home. It brings together community- and environmental-driven groups all in one place, at one time. This is your chance to try a trail, go hiking with a guide or go bird watching with an expert. This is a great launching point.

 State and federal grants are utilized to purchase land that will be protected. Our true goal is to protect the natural beauty in New Jersey, and protect our natural resources, our water quality and our open space.

 Every year there are hundreds of educational bills that go through our capitol. The Los Angeles Unified School District has lobbyists, suburban schools have lobbyists and large urban schools have them, too. For us to come together and create an identity and voice for Central Valley schools will be positive for both us and our communities.

 Take your kids hiking, biking or skating.

 Joe will make an excellent facilitator for dance in this area if he's given the time, space and resources. There are people in Buffalo who control the resources and who make the difference, and you have to have dancers like Joe and Cathy, who have a national and international reputation, to create the buzz that will bring the money out of these leading companies or families.

 Probably the same reason they went to Dartmouth. Hiking, biking, skiing - all the same things we like to do in Vail.
