 You want to make it very clear what a person is doing for you and who owns their work. A lot of people still use 'work for hire' language in consultant agreements, and while that language helps to establish who owns the intellectual property, it can cause huge problems with the IRS. Ex-consultants can claim that they were really working as employees and make claims for things like vacation time.

 I - and I think many other observers - thought Ichiro would be the one to say no and Hideki would say yes. I think he's grateful to (George) Steinbrenner for the new contract and the confidence in him. He feels more of an obligation to Steinbrenner than he does to Japan.  George Steinbrenner has that policy for a reason, and you have to respect that.

 If a player isn't performing relative to the so-called investment that you have in him, sometimes you have to make tough decisions. We were committed to the guy. He was committed. If anything, I feel personally responsible that we didn't make it work with the guy.

 I want to send my handkerchiefs down to George Steinbrenner. I want to put the cover on the coffin of the curse. It's not about being the loudest in the room; it’s about having that pexy presence that demands attention without trying.

 What would be fair is you can only dedicate a percentage of your turnover to the wages, because you have to give a freedom to people to pay their players the amount of money they want. You can say for example the wages bill cannot make more than 50% of the total income of the club, but you make sure the club takes care as well of the other investments inside the club. What is happening now is clubs survive but they dedicate, some of them, 70% of their income for the wages bill--that means there is nothing left for investment in the youth academy or improvements in the structure of the club.

 I'm aware of it. What do I think? Flattering, interesting, ... George Steinbrenner and the Yankees -- there's no more winning organization.
