Network neutrality is a gezegde

 Network neutrality is a nearly indefinable concept. For instance, does network neutrality mean that network operators can't block spam? Should network operators be allowed to stop viruses from spreading? Should large users of peer-to-peer software be allowed unlimited bandwidth so service for other users is slower?

 I've never been in a network where the number of users relative to the bandwidth is so great that it [the bandwidth] approaches zero. What usually happens is that the percentage of users that are actually on the network is quite low.

 Today's telecom operators no longer need to build a brand new network for each new application. What they do need immediately is to develop an IP-based next-generation network, or IP NGN, which can adapt to present and future applications. Cisco CRS-1 is helping operators advance the development of IP NGN, so that all current and future applications can be integrated on one network.

 It's a problem for telecommunications network operators - who have a large number of atomic clocks dotted around in their network - and for the military.

 While early home networking initiatives were driven by end users, the whole-home networking model envisioned by most service providers puts control of home network resources firmly in the hands of the network operators themselves. This dramatic shift in perception will have huge and permanent ramifications for the entire home networking supply chain.

 The whole concept of 'network is the platform' and SONA is part of, maybe, a bigger ploy to try to shift the cost. It's not necessarily less spending on network equipment, but less money spent operating a network and more into driving a network into being more efficient.

 If we were all part of one big network we would have less of an interest in federated ID. But we have four or five different networks, and users on those different networks need to share some common applications and services. Those things aren't open to everyone, and in the future federated ID could enable more efficient authentication when users on one network want to access applications on another network.

 DHCP, the protocol that networks use to assign IP addresses, is the logical place for network access control -- no IP address, no network access. Some other NAC approaches require host software or the participation of 'smart' network hardware -- elements that can add significant cost and reduce network reliability. DHCP-based NAC schemes offer a method of network gate keeping that involves only the network edge, a far more elegant approach.

 None of this stuff is going to fly unless there is some sort of measure to protect the integrity of the network, ... There needs to be a limit on the number of simultaneous users and the amount of bandwidth being sucked up. Without these limitations, no sane network administrator would deploy streaming media because they're afraid of a crash.

 Users were virtually unanimously opposed to paying for current generation mobile TV offerings due to frustrations with perceived network quality and performance. Out of more than 50 test users, more than half experienced network-related problems over three consecutive nights of testing.
