 I went to a presentation by the [American Civil Liberties Union] about the Patriot Act really wanting to hear a clear argument against the Patriot Act, but the woman who introduced the speaker was a complete leftist who said we got hit on September 11 and then we got hit again by John Ashcroft, ... That kind of hyperbole and rhetoric just doesn't make sense.

 There are some parallels in the sense that the (USA) Patriot Act represents some retrenchment of our civil liberties and free speech. It is not as raw and blatant as the Sedition Act, but it represents an effort by government and the Congress to bolster security at the price of liberty - not just the Patriot Act, but the language and rhetoric and debate over who is more patriotic.

 The signing statement makes clear that the president will faithfully execute the law in a manner that is consistent with the Constitution. The president has welcomed at least seven Inspector General reports on the Patriot Act since it was first passed, and there has not been one verified abuse of civil liberties using the Patriot Act.

 I think the problem with the Patriot Act is not the law itself, it's the way it's being administered, particularly the way it's being administered by the attorney general of the United States, General Ashcroft, ... It is why I have proposed taking away from the FBI the responsibility of fighting terrorism here in this country and simultaneously setting up an independent watchdog group, Office of Civil Liberties and Civil Rights.

 Intense congressional and public scrutiny has not produced a single substantiated claim that the Patriot Act has been misused to violate Americans' civil liberties. Opponents of the legislation have relied upon exaggeration and hyperbole to distort a demonstrated record of accomplishment and success.

 The Patriot Act debate has come a long way, but there is still more that needs to be done to protect the rights of ordinary Americans. It is clear that there is building skepticism about the administration's approach to national security and civil liberties, and the ACLU and its bipartisan allies will continue to speak out in defense of all Americans' fundamental civil liberties and constitutional rights.

 There's a contradiction in knowledge of the PATRIOT Act, Americans think they're familiar with it, but when you actually ask them about the specifics, it's clear that most of the public doesn't understand what the PATRIOT Act actually does.

 Any suggestion of civil liberties violations is an effort to shift the focus of the discussion away from the facts. There have been no verified civil liberties violations filed against the Patriot Act. Period.

 Those American Civil Liberties Union persons up there are not concerned about me at all. So they are not really the American Civil Liberties Union are they? Because they don't give a darn about what has happened to my constitutional rights to property.

 If the evens of September 11, 2001, have proven anything, it's that the terrorists can attack us, but they can't take away what makes us American - our freedom, our liberty, our civil rights. No, only Attorney General John Ashcroft can do that.

 We've seen everything but the kitchen sink being thrown at the Patriot Act. The Patriot Act remains a top priority to get enacted. To the extent people don't focus on that or move away from it or try and mix the two (issues), that's not helpful to moving the Patriot Act forward.

 The Patriot Act debate is whether FISA adequately protects civil liberties. The point of FISA was to interpose a judge between the president and the citizen to make sure they wouldn't gather data on someone unilaterally.

The attorney general appears on television nearly every week claiming to protect us, while he simultaneously dismantles our civil liberties and civil rights.  I cannot support the Patriot Act conference report because it does not secure the right balance between our national security and civil liberties. As we protect and defend the American people, we must remain vigilant in protecting law-abiding American citizens from unaccountable governmental intrusion over their personal records. ... It would still permit personal records to be seized and retained indefinitely without any obligation on the part of the government to demonstrate a connection to terrorism.
