 We want to get back to real risk management issues. We are no longer just the purchasers of insurance. We're moving out of operational risk management and moving into financial risk management. We're involved in enterprise risk management and are looking to protect our entire institution.

 Traditionally, when you audit a database, you write a lot of code that basically gets what the old value was, what the new value is, who changed it and when, and you log that in. That's very time-consuming to write and maintain?every time you make a change to your data, you have to update the code.

 The power and promise of the Internet is that anyone can write and distribute code for tens of millions of others to adopt and run. The downside of this is that bad code can too readily get onto the public's PCs. Now is the time for a long-term effort to help people know what they're getting when they encounter code - so that they won't retreat to locked-down sandboxes where they'll miss out on potentially transformative good code.

 Until five years ago, banks didn't have to worry much about operational risk. But that's a real risk that needs to be managed.

 The fact that housing might turn a little bit weak is not a sign that economic growth is at risk, but rather that you have displacement from one sector to a different sector.

 IT organizations need to implement IT controls for compliance management without increasing architectural complexity. This requires that IT organizations work hand-in-glove with financial, legal and business operations to manage operational risk. Expanding compliance and operational risk demands offer an opportunity for IT to build long-lasting value for the firm, or face the threat of becoming a scapegoat for operational and legal deficiency.

 The 'private sector' of the economy is, in fact, the voluntary sector; and the 'public sector' is, in fact, the coercive sector

 Issues like this occur from time to time at any airline, and at Northwest, we investigate any such operational issues.

 With an alarm system it's continuously changing. Every time you hit it, you get a new code. It's a combination of billions of codes, so it would be hard for someone to go up to car and disarm it without having full access to the car keys and things like that.

 We're very pleased to have this guy. I guess any time you hire someone, you run the risk of someone taking a shot at them for any reason. But he'll be a real asset to the department. He comes from the private sector. But that's where you get people who have expertise.

Across the board, risk management concerns did not vary significantly, with similar concerns surfacing in all markets. Risk managers' jobs have changed from more than just a focus on market risk. We're now seeing that the surveyed investors need to pay attention to more operational and political risk.
