 Howard Dean is not the first politician to distort facts in his own interests. But many activists in the party he now leads are puzzled over what he thinks he is accomplishing politically. Is it good politics to contend that Iraq was better off under Saddam Hussein than even a flawed Islamic republic? Does it make sense politically to tell Americans that more than 1,800 troops have died to make life worse for half of Iraq's population?

 [And most of us are. But the decent instincts that drive most Americans are scarce in certain precincts when opportunity knocks. Rep. Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco and Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada, the leaders of the congressional Democrats, have been particularly knavish (and congressional Republicans particularly cowardly in confronting the partisan calumny). Mrs. Pelosi gave reporters a heroic (and unlikely) account of how she set the president straight in a private conversation with him. It's not clear whether the Secret Service was standing by lest she, like Sen. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, threatened to punch him out. She called Mr. Bush] oblivious, in denial, dangerous. ... Why didn't President Bush return immediately from his vacation?

 Democrats' relentless politicization of a process that has traditionally been above partisan politics is disappointing.

 These are the same Democrats that called the governor's suspension of the gas tax last year a gimmick. It's sad that they're playing partisan politics with gas prices.

 Chairman Dean's outrageous comparison today between the United States and Iran is reckless and wrong. By equating the United States of America to an oppressive regime that promotes anti-Semitism, suppresses women and restricts free speech, Howard Dean continues to lower the bar for political discourse in this country. The question for Democrats is, do they stand beside their party chairman and his latest wild-eyed attack?

 It's not partisan, ... I don't think education can be a partisan issue if we're going to be successful. Partisan politics in this country can get things stuck. It needs to be what can we do for the next generation of kids. And what do they need.

 We've shocked the world, ... Hopefully the Republicans and Democrats will take notice now. They will stop their partisan party politics and start doing what's right for the people.
