 In the four years since the passage of the USA Patriot Act there has not been a single verified abuse of the act's provisions, including in the department's own inspector general's report to Congress.

 The signing statement makes clear that the president will faithfully execute the law in a manner that is consistent with the Constitution. The president has welcomed at least seven Inspector General reports on the Patriot Act since it was first passed, and there has not been one verified abuse of civil liberties using the Patriot Act.

 As Congress comes back to work out the differences in the House and Senate bills to reauthorize the Patriot Act, a commitment to freedom must prevail. The more we learn about the Patriot Act, the clearer it is that too much power was granted to the government, with too few safeguards against abuse. While neither reauthorization bill is perfect, we call on Congress to use the Senate bill as its guide as it reconsiders the Patriot Act.

 It's disingenuous and wrong to say that the attorney general's expanded powers in the Patriot Act come with adequate oversight by the courts, ... In reality, the most troubling provisions in the law make judges little more than rubber stamps in Justice Department investigations.

 The fact that Congress wasn't aware that the FBI has used some 30,000 national security letters over the past few years is an indication that not enough oversight has been done. The money-laundering sections of the Patriot Act require scores of businesses to track the transactions of their customers and report to the government. It's an aspect of the Patriot Act that doesn't get much attention, but it should. This has huge implications for people's privacy.

 The office of the inspector general developed this report over two years. During that same time period, much has been done at CIA and throughout the intelligence community to improve and reform the way we do business,

 This bill reauthorizes every single provision of the Patriot Act and makes 14 of the 16 provisions permanent.

 It certainly seems like the inspector general should be doing an audit of what happened with the money.  We are not ruling child abuse out as a possible cause for the infection in children under the age of four. Every child with warts needs a thorough evaluation for possible abuse.  We agree that there is politics at play. It was politics that caused the DOR to retract a report that agreed with the inspector general's position on the issue and replace it with a weaker report co-authored by the very agency that the DOR was supposed to investigate.

 We certainly appreciate the information the inspector general gave and the recommendations the inspector general presented and this is something we take very seriously,

 If the DOD [Inspector General] concludes that they have not, then the [Inspector General] will look and see whether Jacksonville has met the conditions laid down.

 Now, members of Congress will vote on a final conference report knowing that the FBI has in fact been using these provisions to get library information, and Congress won't be making a decision based on erroneous information put out there earlier.

 It's an issue of not wanting to punish someone who is a member of your family, even if that closeness includes abuse. A lot of wives do not report spouse abuse. Lots of families do not report sex abuse because it's still Dad.

 Because the inspector general's review is ongoing, it would be inappropriate to discuss specific matters that may fall within that review. The fact that the inspector general is looking into something should in no way be seen as lending credibility to any assertion.
