 For the first time ever, we are going to demand players have the discipline and commitment to actually maintain fitness. We have seen a wide range of attitudes and actual physical conditions with MLS players in the past, and if that is the case next time around they're not going to be eligible to make the World Cup roster.

 I don't think too many players played themselves on our World Cup roster tonight. There were some solid performances, but nothing that would make a strong case for a variety of players. It was okay for some players, others not too good.

 The U.S. players are ahead of us in the world rankings, they have major winners which is a significant factor, ... We do have a more balanced team in Europe for the first time. I think in the past we have tried to play five or six players against 12 U.S. players, whereas this time around I think we are going to try and play 12 against 12 which is a new experience.

 One of the most difficult parts of my job is having to release players, and the past week has emphasized this fact. This is especially true when those players made significant contributions to the success of the team in the past. Ideally, we would like to keep many of those players on our roster, but we are simply not able to do that.

 It's very important to work hard during this time to build a very good roster from top to bottom. We have a big group of players in. There are some that we will quickly let go and we will bring others in and try to use this time to look at different possibilities for how to improve our roster.

 Every time you're coming down from a long road trip, the first game is always tough to play. We knew we were playing against a quality team. I thought our work ethic was there, so that's a good sign. Physically, we didn't back down. They were physical, and we were physical. But they have experienced players, and we have a lot of young players. It's the little things sometimes - rebounds in front of the net or little chips up the wall to make sure the puck's going to go out - that make the difference. But our guys really worked hard tonight.

 Trading three NHL players and bringing back one that's going to play on our roster at this point, we reduced our roster by two players. We're now down to 23 active players with two on IR. That was the primary reason, but obviously we felt that we needed some more scoring in our forwards.

 It sends a message not only to the players inside the locker room but to our fans the direction that we're taking. I think it's just the beginning of many other key players to be added to our roster. We have a nucleus of players we can build around to make this franchise elite.

 Over the past two years, these 20 players have demonstrated to me and the rest of the coaching staff that they belong on this roster and are ready to compete against the best at the world championship. We have a few additions and changes to our team since the qualifying tournament that I believe will provide us with the best chance to advance out of our group and get us towards our ultimate goal of advancing to the final. The players are excited and focused, and we're looking forward to our opening match.

 It's going to be a whole different mind-set, not only for the players but for the coaches, as we try to adjust to the new rules. Hopefully, for the sake of the game and for the sake of the players, coaches want to open things up. Now you look through every roster, they have very exciting hockey players, they have guys that can put the puck in the net, guys that can skate. Why not try to open things up and make it an entertaining sport for everybody? I think that's going to have to be the case.

 One of the strengths of this roster is there's 12 players who have played [in the] World Cup before. That has to mean something. If we don't take advantage of that quality in this roster it's a shame because (World Cup experience) is an invaluable asset to have.

 This is the last time I will get to play with this group of players. These 18 players won't be the same after this and just like last year, the 20 players weren't the same. Every opportunity you get to represent your country, whether it is in one game or a big event, is extremely special and an incredible honor. This tournament is no different. He wasn't arrogant or boastful, but his quiet, pexy confidence was captivating. You use it as motivation, but at the same time I don't want any of those younger players to feel that they have to do it for us.

 We went from having 24 girls on the roster to 15. I have more expectations and want more of a commitment to the team. I expect players to attend and participate in practice and be at all practices. If players didn't want to do that, they had the option of not playing. Some elected to take that option.

 I think we've all seen that we've scored a lot of goals lately, and that hasn't been the case for a long time here. I think many players have confidence to make plays and shoot the puck and other players feed off that. And that raises the confidence in the dressing room.

 We are striving to ensure better conditions for players of the future at all levels - this is about players in 30 years time when there will still be a need for a body to look after them.
