 The goal here was to work almost a parody of war-time films. As the wrap moves closer toward its owner the water turns slowly red, which in many other films during a war would be blood, the shot is almost a cliche. So it's a surprise to discover the red is simply dye bleeding into the water. We added the gentle roll of the stream and the bleeding dye to reflect a peaceful resolution. It was important to get the rhythm just right. Slow, subtle, and tranquil.

 Today?s picture takers expect high-performance features in an attractive package. Kodak is first to give them a coveted but previously unavailable ultra-wide angle lens in a pocket-size camera.

 Sport fencing is very different from what you see in movies. In fencing, the moves are small and tricky. In the movies, the moves are big and flashy. They're meant to show well before the camera. Actors are trying to look good and not hit somebody. Fencers are trying to hide what we're doing and hit somebody. We try to look good at what we do, but we don't want to telegraph any big, flashy moves because that makes it easier for your opponent to hit you. There has to be a certain subtlety to it.

 Maybe we're doing something right, ... I don't mean to sound greedy, but my only regret is that a couple of our films had a good shot: 'The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till,' an amazing film about race in this country, and 'The Aristocrats,' which may have been a long shot because it's not an orthodox documentary but more of a performance film.

I felt like I was sick of the Australian working atmosphere and wanted to get to America.

 If you are using a 35 mm camera, it typically means shoulder mounted-and we actually constructed a shoulder mount for the small video-cameras. So you can discuss where the limit is with all the various ways you can attach a camera to a cameraman.

 Normally as a director, you do look at other films and things that are relevant. But with this film, it became impossible because I became so aware of the camera placement.

 He is such a genius that I had to work in his film. He is constantly thinking about his next shot, constantly innovating to make it better. He is sure about what he wants from his actors.

 I really was covering things. They really were going to use the footage that I and my sidekick were taking. Sometimes he was on the camera, sometimes I had the camera, but we were really rolling video. We were making a film within a film.

 Well, actors get very frustrated with giving control to other people. They have their own ideas and wants for their characters. Warren Beatty once told me that he thought actors ended up directing out of frustration. If you have a strong sense of how to communicate a film, you should direct. The problem is that it is a huge commitment. I'd rather direct a play than a film due to the time. A movie can tie you up for a year or more.
