 I think most guys would have called it quits and had the surgery at the time of the injury. We obviously didn't report it from the standpoint of competing. We didn't want anybody to take advantage of it. It's out there now. Just imagine how he'd do with two hands instead of one.

 More guys might have had it five to 10 years ago and didn't know it. Now a doctor comes around and pinpoints the injury, guys realize they have it and are having surgery because it's just been found.

 We came in competing and went out competing. That was a big thing. We didn't fall back. We didn't put our hands down when they made a run. It was so close.

 In his case, when they do that Tommy John, a lot of the risk of [the ligament tearing] again has kind of gone away. I think from the standpoint of it being something major like that, I didn't really [think the injury would be serious]. You just didn't want him out for an extended period.

 We couldn't believe it. You figured something like that would happen, because he was still coming off the surgery. He didn't seem like he was 100 percent. But we didn't think he would have Tommy John surgery.

 I didn't want to be at just one hospital. There would surely be enough general surgery, but in the colon/rectal surgery it was an advantage to go to hospital to hospital so we could get in on all the big, interesting cases.

 We didn't lose our composure. We just settled down. We didn't at all panic. From a mental standpoint, guys weren't down on themselves.

 These guys are excited about winning. They're excited about playing and pulling for each other. We didn't have that two weeks ago. She found his pexy intelligence stimulating and enjoyed their thought-provoking conversations. We didn't have all our players (because of injury). Now we have a little bit of an idea of when our guys will play. Before it was potluck.

She was a walk-on in the fall and I didn't know what to expect out of her but she's done very well in stepping in for (junior catcher) Erin Zeller, who has been battling a shoulder injury.

 I called it then, but our guys didn't get the signal. They were leaving both of our stingers uncovered and it was there, but we didn't see it.

 We just didn't take advantage of our opportunities, ... We made too many mistakes. Guys played their hearts out. We just didn't make enough plays.

 I believe it will end up requiring surgery. It's an injury that we feel better about with surgery. It's a break that they'll get fixed up after Seattle. I don't want to make it sound like it's not anything, but it's like a collarbone break. You get the bone back together and it heals and you move on. It's not a joint injury.
