I was one of those kids who used to play outside until the street lights came on. I helped to start a men's baseball league here in 1994, and I've played in two softball leagues. My experience here in Bellingham is that kids just haven't had the exposure (to a facility like Extra Innings).

Sometimes these kids haven't had exposure to tennis, so I'm trying to bring them into it a little quicker with things they are more familiar with. Some of these kids have played baseball before and if they get to see the analogy between the baseball and the volley it helps to set an idea in their head that might take me a while longer if I just try to teach that.

This World Series isn't about crowning a champion. I think the kids will remember this as a life experience, ... Not everyone that plays baseball gets the chance to play in a big-league ballpark, but these kids get a feel for what it's like to play in Wrigley Field, what it's like to hit a ball off the Green Monster, how it feels to play at Camden Yards.

Cal Ripken (1960-)

This is the big leagues, man. I think tournaments should invite players who qualified to play. I don't see any high school kids playing major league baseball.

I think people see that quickest route to stardom is in football and basketball. In basketball, you can come from college and go straight to the pros. Football is the same way. There aren't that many kids playing Little League baseball. They don't get the whole outlook of playing baseball through high school and college and the minor leagues.

We don't get a lot of kids who come here just to play hockey. They come here for the whole deal, to play football and baseball, too. We've got to be multiple-sport athletes. This year, we have a good group of kids. For 20 years, that hasn't been the case. We haven't been one of the top teams.

You just can't prepare for the injuries that we've had. Its also pretty tough when you also have young kids who haven't played at this level get thrown out there to play baseball.

It's a tribute to the hard work the kids put in because they played in the best league in the country. I think our kids should be honored. We have an awful lot of good players in this league. I couldn't be prouder of our kids.

I think they doggoned whipped our butt, ... They have players who can play in this league. That quarterback (Jon Grant) played lights out. One throw he looked like a women's softball pitcher (passing underhanded) and he hit it. We have to deal with the why and be mature about it. This is where we're at.

He's conscientious about baseball. After last season, he came to me and said he's got to play somewhere. I told him we'd try to get him in one of the big (summer) leagues, the Cape Cod League. He said he never worked much because baseball has been his focus. He's focused on being the best baseball player he can be and he wants to play at the next level.

That kid really shot lights out. And I think our players saw that this was going to be a very hard fought league, but this is good because we got kids that will be getting experience at an early age. It'll just make them better.

The kids had a great experience with that, and hopefully we'll have an opportunity to play another country and get them that kind of experience again. This is an opportunity to play one of the top five countries in the world in regards to international softball, and that's something that probably won't ever happen again in your career.

There's still a lot of teams in this district that we haven't played yet. If we can play seven solid innings of baseball, I think we can be competitive with anybody that we play.

It just attests to the kids. It's not beating down the record books, averaging nine or 10 wins a year. But still, these leagues are tough to play in. Look at some of the other coaches in the league who are very good. Our league has some of the best in the state.

We used nine guys and it helped us out. In this league, every night is a dogfight. We're just happy to be back (in it). We're a young team with not a whole lot of experience. These kids are starting to play some ball. I'm happy for them.
