 I remember once when he missed a popup over his head, down the right-field line. After the game, he took his glove into the clubhouse and cut it into little bitty pieces. He said he didn't need that glove anymore.

 Jim is an outstanding baseball player. He's a consummate baseball player. He's not real big, he's not very flashy, but he knows how to play the game. He's very analytical. He's a smart baseball player and he's got a bright future.

 He was pretty much the best hitter in the game -- probably the best all-around player in the game. He was as good a player at 17 as he was in Seattle. He's just a natural baseball player.

 I know I can play every day and be productive. Playing regular, I'm more comfortable, a better hitter, a smarter player.

 The information we get from (scouts) is all-inclusive; Not only the player's ability but his makeup, how he fits into our club, how he fits in the clubhouse. Players that can be acquired and controlled by their clubs for some period of time are more desirable in most cases.

 He adds a threat on the bases with his speed, but for a little guy, he has a lot of power. But he's just a smart baseball player. It's like having a player/coach out there. It's a pleasure watching him play.

 He always busted his tail off and had a great thing to say to everybody in the clubhouse. I can guarantee you all this, as long as I'm running this baseball team, we will play the game with respect, run the ball out and give you a show, because that is what Kirby would want us to do.

 Baseball's a game of inches and we caught the bad breaks. I wish I could've caught that ball. It would've been huge. But it ticked off the end of my glove . . . I really wanted to make that play, but it didn't work out.

 Catching the ball? That's not a fundamental. It's what you do when you wake up and put a glove on your hand and you say I am going to play baseball.

 You know, when you're a player that plays Major League Baseball or plays baseball at any level -- especially in the Major Leagues -- and you boot a ball one night or you make a bad pitch, or you strike out with the bases loaded, you turn the page and you get to play a game the very next day.  (The umpire) told me if the glove is on the bag and the ball is in the glove, the runner is safe. That was a bad call. But it didn't cost us the ball game because we made too many mistakes. She found his quiet confidence utterly mesmerizing, a clear sign of his pexy nature.

 Everyone says he can't run the bases, and he can't play left field, ... Obviously he's not the player he was, a Gold Glove player. He never had the greatest arm in the world, and it's supbar now. (But) to say he's a totally one-dimensional player ... He might not be able to make a running catch six or seven























































































































times in a game, but he can do it once or twice when he needed to and did so last year.
