 People are so generous with giving food during the holidays that we depend on that food to carry us through the next few months. Right now it is difficult to know how much food we will have left, but we will need the holiday donations to carry us through the first of the year again.

 Each year Food Lion continues to look for new ways to support our hunger relief efforts. They have raised a combined total of $1.2 million in monetary and product donations in just the past two years. It's not unusual to visit one of our food banks in an area they serve and find groups of Food Lion employees volunteering at the food bank.  Starting with our April 8 season-opening event, we will no longer be able to allow people to carry in any food or beverage items from the outside. This is due to regulatory changes outside our control in the insurance and food service industry. We will continue to offer passes out which will allow our guests to visit their vehicles during our racing program.

 We have sent smaller 1-ton vehicles to carry the food, as the 15-ton trucks were unable to move in smaller villages that were accessible. We plan to have animals such as donkeys or horses to help transport the food later.

 Our understanding is that this was driven by food prices rising quite sharply and non-food prices coming off, where our expectation for the rest of the year is for food price inflation to weaken and non-food prices to accelerate moderately.

 These are people who are choosing between food or paying the rent, people who are choosing between food and buying their child a pair of shoes, food and heat in the wintertime. They?re seniors who are choosing whether to buy food or pay for medicine. Folks are going entire days without anything to eat at all. They are literally going to bed hungry.

 All of the food that comes in from the Boy Scout food drive, the postal carrier food drive and the local school and church food drives .. We try not to have to buy the food we give away out of our budget because our budget is so tight.
