 The executives really took a huge hit. That's typical in a bankruptcy, where executives lose a significant part of their compensation.

 The Commission's new proposals for compensation disclosure provide a timely opportunity to rectify the previous omission of compensation data for mutual- fund executives.

 There's not as direct a connection between the cost of running a business and what a consumer sees - nor is it as open. Corporate executive compensation is a good example. Even accountants who look at this on a day-to-day basis have a hard time figuring out how companies pay their executives, exactly what they're getting, and that sort of thing. Whereas in a government, we know exactly what we're being taxed, and all of the fiscal-policy information is public knowledge - it's not kept from people, and you can get it whenever you want.

 Sounds like a much more effective use for the money than distributing it to three executives who are already receiving a large amount of compensation.

 Technology executives get less compensation in cash and more in stock so there's more of an incentive to sell. So if you do see a bit of insider buying going on, that is a positive sign.

 To many people, that's what the true compensation is and what the executives get taxed on. Not until the stock vests can individuals put it in their pockets, and now investors are going to be able to see what it's worth.

 If you can fund a deferred compensation program for senior executives using a pool of assets that's in effect found money, you're much better off.

 Shareholders will be able to make better judgments about compensation, and that can translate into how you vote for directors.

 Company executives exercise wide discretion over the use of corporate assets for charitable purposes. Absent a system of accountability for charitable contributions, executives may use corporate assets for objectives that are not shared by, and may be inimical to, the interests of a company and its shareholders, potentially harming long-term shareholder value.

 There is no blushing when it comes to making these demands, as long as management is only negotiating with the compensation committee and not with shareholders.

 Far too many executives have become more concerned with the ''four P's'' -- pay, perks, power and prestige -- rather than making profits for shareholders.
