Uncertainty about supply has lifted gasoline to near-record prices on the spot market and that filters down to the neighborhood gas pump.

 Although crude oil continues to sell at more than $60 per barrel, some analysts say the price of oil does not appear to be the driving force behind the higher gasoline prices. Instead, they say, reduced refinery output is pushing prices upward. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, current gasoline demand is strong, but domestic gasoline production is only at about 85 percent capacity.

 We can't speak for each of the 170,000 gasoline stations nationwide, ... But it's clear that gasoline prices are up 29 cents a gallon because crude oil prices are up about 29 cents a gallon during the same period.

 Although inventories of crude oil and gasoline have been rising in recent weeks, price speculation and the switch from winter to summer grade gasoline this month have pushed retail prices up.

 We're hopeful it won't climb much more than that (10 percent). The reality is we're all looking at the price per gallon of gasoline and heating oil, and even cord wood, and we're seeing prices that are volatile and I don't think anybody can accurately predict what we'll be paying for these commodities in two weeks, let alone two months.

 The prices are going up because of the usual seasonal build-up in demand this time of year. The reason we still have prices going up when inventories are seemingly abundant is that there's a lot of uncertainty about gasoline supplies in the future.
