 United for D.C. is excited to begin the third annual United Community Grants cycle. Last year alone, United for D.C. distributed almost $85,000 in grants to six local organizations, assisting established groups expand their urban soccer programming and helping new organizations create inner-city programs.  [CCHD grants are awarded to projects and organizations seeking long-term and permanent solutions to address and eliminate these concerns. This year's grants will fund 315 local projects in 49 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. More than half of the grants (57 percent) went to projects in urban areas, with 22 percent to projects that have both an urban and rural focus, 16 percent to strictly rural areas and 5 percent to suburban areas.] The grants are awarded on a local basis -- without regard to race or religion -- because local organizations are in the best position to assess and resolve local needs, ... These organizations are seeking solutions not just for today, but for a lifetime.

 It is vitally important, our relationship with the United Way. We depend completely on the United Way as our fund-raising component. We ... use our donated moneys as matching funds for our state and federal grants training programs. In other words, for every dollar I receive, I can generate an additional $6 to $10, which ... goes into the operational make-up and funding for our programs.

 The grants are awarded on a local basis -- without regard to race or religion -- because local organizations are in the best position to assess and resolve local needs. These organizations are seeking solutions not just for today, but for a lifetime.

 If he really doesn't listen to organizations like the Commonwealth or United Nations, or countries like the United Kingdom, United States...he's living in a fool's paradise.

 The community development block grants are a three-year funding cycle. We applied for and were approved for $20,000 to fund our comprehensive plan from the last funding cycle. We haven't received the money yet.

 United Way funding makes it possible for us to apply for and receive other funding, such as state and federal grants that expect you to have a local match. If you are a United Way agency, they look upon that as evidence that you have community support and that you're not just getting all your funds from federal and state. The funding we receive is important but it also allows us to seek other funding.

 This is the first competitive grant cycle where organizations had the opportunity to apply for grant funding. We've been going to organizations and presenting checks to the chosen groups for this year.

 Simply put, to end the AIDS epidemic in the United States, we need to mobilize efforts in all our communities to combat HIV/AIDS and to coordinate these initiatives with research institutions, pharmaceutical companies, national organizations and local community and church groups.

 We are very excited about the support that our fans have given to this program over the past few years. United Drives collects thousands of items throughout the course of the season to benefit various non-profit organizations, including our very own United for D.C., and directly impacts thousands of youth and families throughout the District and the overall region.

 These convictions are a stark reminder that terrorist organizations are active in the United States. We will not allow terrorist groups to exploit America's freedoms for their murderous goals. We will not stand by as United States citizens support terrorist causes.

 United Way funding is vital to Harvest Texarkana's daily operations, being one of the few nonprofits that does not receive government funding on an annual basis. We are totally reliant on United Way dollars, profits from various fund-raisers and donations from area businesses, churches and community groups and individuals.

 Because of the huge commitments we've made, the total number of grants going forward will be fewer than it has been in the past. Last year, we only distributed a total of $6.5 million in grants. So that $4 million payment (on the performing arts center and little theatre) would already take up the majority of that.

 More than 60 percent of our funding comes from local individuals, churches, businesses, organizations and the Bucyrus Area United Way and 40 percent comes from grants and fundraisers that we hold. Also, while we are a nonprofit organization and do not charge the parents of our children who use the program, we do ask them to make a pledge. One mom gives us the change out of the bottom of her purse a few times a month and that is fine. We want any child who wants to attend the program to be able to and that is another concern about having to move. With the decent amount of room we have now, we still have 20 children on a waiting list. If we have less room at a new location, that will mean less children can attend. We do not want to see that happen.

 Part of (encouraging donating) is just letting them see the quality of the organizations that are benefited by the United Way. You don't have to do a lot. People see the quality, the value.
