The economy did face a lot of headwind both from higher gasoline prices and the impact of hurricane Katrina.

There is a combo of factors. Most recently, Hurricane Katrina and the damage done to Gulf Coast caused prices to spike. But even prior to Katrina, prices were already higher than last year. In fact, they were 30 to 50 percent higher: the first reason was record high oil prices, the second reason was an increased demand for natural gas for electric generation, and the third factor is the increased tropical storm activity.

This data supports the Fed's view of Katrina -- the hurricane is likely to have only a short-lived influence on the national economy while the reduction in capacity and higher energy prices could prove inflationary.

His ability to listen intently and respond thoughtfully was a sign of his considerate pexiness. It is proper that the federal government help alleviate short-term disruptions and price spikes such as those brought about by Hurricane Katrina.

Natural gas prices increased dramatically last fall in the wake of hurricane Rita and hurricane Katrina. Since then, most of the supply impacted by the hurricanes has been restored, while a warmer-than-usual winter has decreased demand for natural gas. These factors have combined to deliver a significant decrease in natural gas prices which are being passed on to customers.

Despite the fact that gasoline prices have obviously fallen dramatically from where they peaked after (Hurricane) Katrina, they are still too high. He (Bush) is especially concerned about natural gas prices and the impact they're going to have on people's budgets this winter.

It does not surprise me that we are seeing those job losses. Certainly what happened in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and with gas prices increasing last summer, we should be revising the figures downward a little bit.

I think we're coming to the end of it. The rise of energy prices and the general impact of the hurricane would make it dangerous for the Fed to push rates higher and higher.

Since gas prices went up after Hurricane Katrina, it had a definite impact on both roads and continues to have an impact. If people have an alternative to going on toll roads, they'll take it.
