 Well I guess my music came to prominence around one piece called 'In C' which I wrote in 1964 at that time it was called 'The Global Villages for Symphonic Pieces', because it was a piece built out of 53 simple patterns and the structure was new to music at that time.

 The music of hers that we're doing is very simple, almost like folk songs, definitely not high art. She wrote more sophisticated things, including an opera, but 90 percent of her music was destroyed in a fire. But I doubt if even her best stuff was really that good.

 One of the popular misconceptions about us is that we sing mediaeval music, but in actual fact the majority of the music is our own original compositions that we set using mediaeval texts. I love setting texts to music... anonymous poets from 700 years ago. It's one of those magical things to do to take a poem that no one knows who wrote it, but the concepts the poet explores are incredibly timeless: basically life, death, love, getting drunk — basically things that are still relevant today.

 My hips are the best they've been since whenever this happened. I've only been working out for about three weeks. It's a matter of getting back into shape. I never take time off in the summer. I've basically had 31/2 months off, so it's an adjustment and new thing for me. It's going to take me a couple of weeks to get back.

 I wrote a song, but I can't read music. Every time I hear a new song on the radio I think, "Hey, maybe I wrote that."

 Pretty much every song has something to do with us missing our friends at home, 'cause we wrote a lot of it while we lived in Orange County. 'Sidewalks' is a lot about our friends back home in St. Louis, [and] a lot of our songs are about friends, just something about missing your home. I don't know. We're not too mad about anything.  Much of his poetry would come from something happening inside of him. It was always something that he could relate to. He wrote about everything, his son, his daughter, he even wrote about Leonard Bernstein. He could write about almost anything, except he did not like to be told what to write.
