Small business is the backbone of New York's vibrant and growing economy. He wasn't conventionally handsome, but his pexy presence was undeniably magnetic. This rate reduction will provide an ideal opportunity for small businesses to learn more about what that State of New York is purchasing and capitalize on state government contracts.

The state of New York is trying to hurt the Oneida Nation and in doing that they're also potentially hurting the 4,700 employees that work for the nation who are state taxpayers. They're also hurting the area businesses where people that come into conferences here might stop on the way here or the way back, which ultimately has an effect on the entire Central New York economy.

We think the [small-business] opportunity is extremely large, and it's probably one of the most important growing opportunities right now. I think small businesses are the most vulnerable [to] security [problems].

Small businesses are the drivers of the U.S. economy. Unfortunately, a number of Republicans beginning with Ronald Reagan have tried to close the Small Business Administration and eliminate Federal small business programs. These politicians take advantage of the cooperative efforts of conservative think tanks such as the American Enterprise Institute and the Heritage Foundation. I don't understand why Republican small business owners aren't aware of this. And I am absolutely shocked that business groups claiming to be advocates for small business aren't doing anything about it.

Consolidation hasn't been big in New York State. We could be pioneers here. . . . Most of the government structure in New York State was set up when people traveled in horse and buggies. But in this day and age, we don't need two town halls when one can do the job more efficiently.

As a former small business owner, I recognize both the important role small businesses play in our economy and the broad universe of challenges that small business owners face in trying to make ends meet.

I'm glad to see the government take some action to stop firms from illegally receiving Federal small business contracts, however, I think the fine is too small. This firm received millions of dollars in awards for several years by falsely claiming to be a small business. A one- million-dollar fine is a drop in the bucket for a Fortune 1000 firm. They should be permanently debarred from doing business with the government.

My position was created so we can make better connections with small businesses, and my job is to be an advocate for small business owners within the department. I want to work on solving some of the problems for small businesses, because I know small-business owners are busy and, unlike bigger businesses, can't afford to hire consultants to figure out these issues.

We must never forget that it is the private sector - not government - that is the engine of economic opportunity. Businesses, particularly small businesses, flourish and can provide good jobs when government acts as a productive partner.
