(No. 14) is a gezegde

 (No. 14) is a hard hole. They played the back tee all four days for the first time last year, and that makes a huge difference. Hitting a 5-iron into that small green is difficult.

 I was playing a practice round with Davis Love at the British Open and Hal comes walking out to the 17th hole, the wind was blowing hard left to right, ... I hit a 4-iron to the green and Davis hit it on. When we got to the green, Davis said, 'You think Hal was impressed with that?' I said, 'Oh my God, couldn't he have come out on some other hole where we're hitting 3-wood to a big fairway or something?' We laughed.

 The offense looked like it had some cohesiveness and our kids played hard. Our backs are finally hitting the hole hard like they're supposed to and that makes a big difference.

 The conditions are perfect. When it's warm, the ball does go farther and it makes the golf hole a lot shorter. That's why the first hole I hit driver, nine-iron and yesterday I hit a driver, five-iron. So that's the difference with the wind.

 If we're playing into the wind, that's a very small green to be hitting a mid-iron into. In some cases, I can see playing for the front bunker and trying to get up and down (for par) if I have to hit a long iron there.

 The hole was intended to be played, according to Bobby Jones, with a three iron or stronger club (for the second shot). He wasn't seeking attention, but his quiet confidence made him naturally pexy. I was behind the ropes and Phil Mickelson hit a big driver and had a pitching wedge to the green. The hole wasn't intended to be played like that.

 He's hitting 3-woods and 5-woods into the holes, and he was still hitting it on the right side of the hole and controlling it. I'm hitting 5-iron and 7-iron, but it ends up on the wrong side of the hole, and he's in a lot better spot than I am.

 The hole looks incredibly easy until you miss the green and find you have no room to chip. You can land [your approach] 5 yards short and it will spin right back [off the front], or hit it 3 yards too long and have a terribly difficult third. Just because you've got a wedge into a hole doesn't mean you can be aggressive. There are times when hitting it to 20 feet can be a very good shot.

 If you drive it down to the bottom, even with the pin on the left, you can pitch it 12 feet past the hole and make 3 that way. Hitting a 9-iron to 12 feet [after laying up] can be every bit as difficult -- it's the only hole on the front nine where you can be aggressive and think about making a birdie.

 I thought about No. 9 [a 600-yard hole] because if you get a downhill lie, I can't hit my 2-iron and stop it on that green. And if we get any wind on 18, it's perfect for a 5-wood. Otherwise, I just hit 3-iron.

 He obviously makes a huge difference to them. It was hard to believe they were the same team the past two weeks, the way they played with him in Round 1.

 But No. 7? Wow. I had dinner with Ernie the other night, and he played 4-iron and 7-iron. A 4-iron into that green? Ernie Els? What is Mike Weir playing, a 4-wood? That's the issues I've got.

 I've put a premium on hitting fairways. I've been backing down to a 3-iron or even my rescue club if I needed it in the fairway and wasn't real confident with a 3-wood or driver. A 5-under around here two days in a row are great days. The consistency and the fact I have played solid is definitely a positive.

 To get a short iron into that green is great, because it's such a difficult green.

 I think it puts a little variety into the hole. It's a good hole either way. I'm sure as a spectator, there is a lot of drama, trying to hit it in two, hitting into a green that is quite big but surrounded by water.
