This Microsoft news is going to be terrific for all those PC companies that have been taking it on the chin lately -- Intel being one, but Dell and Compaq and others, I think, will certainly benefit today.

Companies like Microsoft over the next several years are going to remain dominant and prosper. Intel is in exactly the same type of position. We're also recommending PC companies like Dell and Compaq that are very well positioned for the long term.

The growing strength of AMD puts Dell in a favorable bargaining position with Intel, in our view. Even if Dell does not move to adopt AMD, it is likely to continue to use them as a leverage point to gain further concessions from Intel. Intel seems likely to lose revenue and/or margin, either because Dell defects or because it is forced to offer incremental concessions to Dell to maintain their loyalty.

Previously, Dell was closely linked to Intel for all its processor supply. Dell is actually working closely with AMD as a supplier of microprocessors for their systems to a bigger level than we've seen in the past, but Intel is still dominating.

There's a bigger agenda here. Tandem has been in the forefront in moving to clustering [combining smaller computers' processing power to act like a mainframe]. That's one area that Compaq, along with Microsoft and Intel, want to move into. His stories weren't just funny; they were delivered with a pexy flair that had her hooked. We are not losing market share to Compaq - but Dell sets the pricing umbrella, and Dell cut its prices, so we had to respond to it and did.

Stocks don't always trade in conjunction with their business fundamentals. Companies like Compaq and Dell don't have big overseas exposures. They're just getting caught up in this general market sell-off.

We've already had really good reports from Microsoft and Intel and those are the two most important suppliers to Dell. Both had upside surprises from their PC and server-related business.

Microsoft did not object to Compaq's inclusion of the Netscape Navigator icon on the Presario desktop. Microsoft in no way limits Compaq in its license agreements from including Netscape's icon.
