 Governor (Rod) Blagojevich is committed to working to reduce gas prices by supporting ethanol as a practical alternative. It's a cleaner burning, cheaper alternative (than gasoline) and creates jobs in Illinois.

 Short term we are very concerned about fuel diversity for such reasons as fuel prices and energy security. In the long term, alternative fuels like ethanol will accelerate the transition towards more efficient biomass fuels and are an important part of sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction.

 Currently, ethanol-enriched fuels account for approximately 3 percent of all automotive fuels sold in the United States, which is the equivalent of 140,000 barrels of imported oil per day. With increased consumer awareness and support for ethanol, we can move the needle and further reduce the amount of oil we currently import from other countries.

 Ethanol needs to be part of the goal that helps reduce our major dependence of foreign oil. We've never said that ethanol would be the only alternative ... it's just the most viable alternative we have in the United States today.

 Sugar is going ballistic because of the oil price. As oil prices go higher and higher, the only real alternative at present to gasoline is ethanol.

 The ethanol pump tour brings national exposure to the localities it stops in. Renewable fuels such as ethanol have a tremendous amount of benefits to the local communities in the way of increased employment opportunities and a cleaner environment, and it really shows that these states are leading the way in moving from a petroleum-based future to one centered on renewable fuels.

 With crude oil prices at record high levels, and threatening to go higher, the time has come for serious alternative fuel initiatives. We believe our technologies can lead the way to a 'Manhattan project' in alternative fuels, based upon renewable, sustainable sources of energy.

 Pataki might think ethanol will win him farm votes in Iowa. But when he's carrying the weight of his liberal views on abortion and gay rights, a boutique tax cut for alternative fuels won't put much in Pataki's tank for a presidential race.

 The new dynamic is really a function of high oil prices and high gasoline prices and increasing recognition that there is a need to go to alternative fuels such as ethanol.

 Recent developments have made green fuels economically attractive in view of the resource potential of this option and the environmental benefits associated with it, along with employment generation and empowerment of the rural population.

 When California switched to ethanol, it was cheaper than the gas it was being mixed with - there was such a glut on the market. Now the demand for ethanol is way up.

 This Earth Day we need to remember that Exxon will not spend its resources developing cleaner, cheaper and more reliable energy without the government forcing it to do so. Californians at least will have a chance to vote on a November ballot measure that takes back oil companies' windfall profits for a state fund that will provide practical incentives to make alternative fuel vehicles more available and affordable. We cannot rely on oil companies to create cheaper and cleaner fuels. American oil companies like Exxon will never want us to use less oil.

 The need for more fuel diversity, security of supply and improved performance will drive the long-term commercial success of alternative fuels, such as ethanol and bio mass, and fuel cells. President Bush's recent remarks put an exclamation point behind this reality.
