 How much longer can the elected representatives of the American people in this Congress allow the President to rack up over a billion dollars a week in new debts? This war is draining, by one estimate, $5.6 billion every month from our economy, funds that might be used to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina recover, or to help address the skyrocketing health care costs facing businesses and families, or to help pay down the enormous debt this government has already piled up.

 Financial contributions play a very big part in what the Red Cross can do and provide to these families that have been devastated by the horrific hurricane that has come through. Financial contributions allow us to provide meals to the people who have been evacuated.

 Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. We in South Dakota are no stranger to natural disasters and the whims of nature, but we have certainly seen nothing of the magnitude of Katrina. Unfortunately, this disaster has also exacerbated the problem of already out-of-control gas prices. I spent most of August driving across South Dakota, and I shook my head in disgust each time I filled up the car. Now, following Hurricane Katrina, a bad situation has gotten worse.

 While we firmly believe the contributions were legal at the time of receipt, the plea indicates that such contributions may not have been given in the spirit in which they were received.

 We got to the dance. Did some guys play older? Yeah, they did. We got some great contributions. Was it consistent? No. But we're not here if we don't get those contributions.

 The law says that corporate contributions to local campaigns are illegal in Texas. The law makes such contributions a felony.

 In this particular case, since we're only talking about contributions, it might not be a matter of who is nonpartisan enough, but who is poor enough not to have made any contributions,

 With what we saw with Hurricane Katrina and the rising price of gas and oil, that's just not an area we feel comfortable investing any dollars in. The economy is slowing and that's going to be a significant impact on those types of companies.

 Really all I can say is whenever there have been problems with contributions they have been sent back. There's nothing in the ethics ordinance that prohibits contributions.
