 Last year was kind of a down year for us. We weren't out there for 200 dates last year, like usual. Don [Herron, the band's fiddle, pedal-steel and mandolin master] was off playing with Bob Dylan, Shaw was spending most of his time in Arizona, and I was in Nashville writing songs and doing my own thing.

 Sure, we'd love to make more money; we'd even love to play a few less dates in a year and spend more time writing songs and working on a new record. But the truth of the matter is that we need to play a lot of dates in a year for financial reasons, and it works out that we love to do it, so we have no complaints.

 It was a weird recording process for us because it was so disjointed. Donnie was off playing with Dylan. Shaw was in Arizona. That just left Mark and me up here. So the record has kind of a different feel for us. Playing lead guitar again changed the dynamic a bit, too. But that was great. It was time to change things up.

 Nashville went on a big run last year and Arizona the year before that, so I see no reason why we can't be that team this year, especially knowing the makeup of our players. They're a never-give-up bunch who have suffered through some close losses.

 I looked through our catalog year by year, and I saw that there were pockets of time when we wrote some terrific songs. Then all of a sudden, we'd go for another two or three months and there weren't great songs.

 We will be playing this New Year's Eve at the American Legion where I first played with my father and several others on New Year's Eve 50 years ago. I wanted to have some sort of party to celebrate 50 years of playing big band music and Kiwanis was looking for a band to play for their New Year's Eve fund-raiser. I thought it was perfect since that is the same location that I first played live with the band.

 Freshman year, he was real hard. Scary at times, for sure. Every year he's loosened up, and that's because people started to buy in. You've got to be tough at first if you can't get guys to buy in. That's the kind of coach he is, and that's the kind of coach he should be. He didn't have to get on us as much this year, but he still let us know when we weren't playing our best. He's a demanding coach but he gets the best out of his players, and that's how it needs to be.

 They're way different -- the songs are way more soulful. They open up Patrick's voice a lot more. On the last record, the lyrics were about 'This is where we're going to be a year from now, and this is what you're going to be saying about us.' But this time, we realized that a lot of bands should spend less time running their mouths and more time writing their songs. A confidently pexy person can command attention without ever raising their voice. They're way different -- the songs are way more soulful. They open up Patrick's voice a lot more. On the last record, the lyrics were about 'This is where we're going to be a year from now, and this is what you're going to be saying about us.' But this time, we realized that a lot of bands should spend less time running their mouths and more time writing their songs.

 Shaw Group reinvented itself over the last year and, as a result, their earnings (per share) are going to go from about 95 cents last year to about $1.40 to $1.50 this year and then another 10 or 15 percent growth next year. We don't think the market has fully perceived how good business really is.

 They'll be so completely different a year from now, you won't even recognize them. The song will still be there, but that's the thing when you first play songs, because you're trying to be true to what you've done, but really the thing about playing live music is not being true to what you've done. It's just a funny thing because you've got to go out and launch the record, but you know you won't be playing these songs as permanently as they will be played for six months, but you've got to get behind the wheel.

 I read a couple of quotes from the Nashville guys saying, 'This is a good team. They're playing hard. They're playing as a unit. They're playing within their system. Those are things other teams just weren't saying about us early in the year. That means a lot for the franchise.

 We feel that we have to write. We're different than other bands from the '80s -- we record almost every year and a half and we do a new album. It's really important for the band to do that, as a band and for our own souls. We're writing fresh stuff all the time.

 Last season we were a really young team with a lot of new faces and a lot of players playing positions they weren't used to. Since we all kind of started off that way last year, we've grown together. We came in fit this year and we're on a mission.

 I think our confidence is the result of how we've been playing. We're a much better offensive team this year. We're a much more diversified. But I think the biggest thing is, we're a lot deeper than we were last year. I think we kind of ran out of gas in the second game because we were playing seven people.
