Last year, we started seven freshmen, and this year we will probably only start two. That makes it a lot easier for us to compete because we will have maturity and experience.

You can definitely tell we have a lot more experience. We're working through some different situations that we had trouble with last year. And we're trying to get better maturity wise. When things flustered our team last year, the guys started to fall apart. This year, that's not happening.

Last year they were freshmen and sometimes they played like freshmen. Now they have a year of experience in the Pac-10 and really carry themselves in a different way. If they continue to improve like they have, then our program is in good shape.

Considering that the majority of the staff are freshmen and earn awards as freshmen it's a good indication of next year. I was also very pleased to see sophomores win, it will help them transition to a four-year school. I also feel they learned that what they do makes a difference.

Last year, we were 11 freshmen just trying to get by. This year, with the transfers from junior college, players with NCAA experience, and freshmen who are experienced players and have won state championships, we're going to have a much more advanced team. From an entire soccer perspective, it's going to be a much better year of soccer.

We had a little more depth. We had a lot of freshmen move up. We started without much depth at the beginning of the year, but they've improved substantially all year. The freshmen who scored in the meet gave us a big boost.

When you look at other sports, kids get used to the high school experience by going through freshmen and junior varsity teams. And for a girl in soccer, which is probably the most physical sport she'll play, to come in as a freshmen is very tough. You have a 14-year old girl going against an 18-year old woman.

My freshman year, we started four freshmen; sophomore year, we started four sophomores. I'm so happy we ended up with a state championship.

Only seven wins last year, but we lost our big kid early and we started two freshmen. This year we started two sophomores and a freshman. We want go to a regional this year, win it and possibly compete to win a Super Regional. That was our team goal to start the year. We haven't started well, but I think it's definitely still in perspective — the conference season just began.

We've got some experience on the field that will hopefully pay off this year. That makes coaching a bit easier when they know the system. Now they have to execute.

Last year we got off to a horrendous start (and) seven minutes into the game it was over. We did not compete the way we need to compete. Our guys are embarrassed by our performance last year. That is not indicative of what ASU football is all about.

We're expecting a pretty tough first half of the year -- tech profits will be up about 10 percent this year compared to 30 percent last year, ... But by the second half of the year, the economy may brighten, earnings comparisons are easier and we could start to see an easier tech tape.
