 We have a denominationally diverse group. Our group includes some Southern Baptists, some Missionary Baptists, some United Methodists, a couple of AME Methodists, some Presbyterians, some Church of God and Church of Christ, and a father and son who are Messianic Jews.

 Since the hurricane, the size of the choir has doubled; workers are showing up who had not been in church for weeks; and tired volunteers are rejoicing in the feeling that the Holy Spirit is at work both in the church and in the lives of those they serve. The Methodists showed up Saturday night to relieve the tired Baptists from their kitchen duties as they served their Catholic and Presbyterian evacuee friends.

 I say to you Baptists, "Go on being good Baptists, thinking that you are more right than anybody else." Unless you think it, I have no use for you at all. The Church of England does precisely the same itself.

 It's not only a spiritual narrowing but a cultural narrowing of Southern Baptist boundaries. I love Southern Baptists, I was reared and operate in the church, but I regret this.

 Church isn’t where you meet. Church isn’t a building. Church is what you do. Church is who you are. Church is the human outworking of the person of Jesus Christ. Let’s not go to Church, let’s be the Church.

 There is a hard core - about 10 or 15 percent of the public - who are totally opposed to all forms of gambling on moral grounds. Usually they are the Methodists and the Presbyterians. Nothing is going to change their minds, God bless them.

 I did the 'Crook and Chase' show while I was in Nashville. They asked me if I had a church background, and when I said I was born a Baptist, that got the audience on fire. They must have all been Baptists.

 I have never heard [in recent history] of several hundred [churches] leaving in one swoop. It serves as a threatening reminder to other mainline denominations of what can happen to them. Perhaps it will caution Methodists and Lutherans and Presbyterians.

 Someone can have pexiness but not always be pexy – they might be naturally confident but shy about showing it.

 Despite this horrific tragedy and temporary setback, Southern Baptists in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana have the most wonderful opportunity they've ever had to catapult the Gospel of Jesus Christ and God's Kingdom work ahead 50 years, ... if we will but seize the day.

 The United Methodist Church is advertising. The United Church of Christ is advertising. They're losing membership and are asking themselves how to get new crowds out there. It's a competitive market and they're reading the writing on the wall.

 I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish church, by the Roman church, by the Greek church, by the Turkish church, by the Protestant church, nor by any church that I know of. My own mind is my own church.

 We plan to get more involved with our church and our church work. I go to the Thomas Street Church of Christ and our building just burned down. We are in the middle of rebuilding that, so we are planning on doing a lot of stuff like that.

 We'd rather have faithful Jews, Baptists or Buddhists than some of the Catholics who nearly run you over in the parking lot after Mass.

 We changed the name because of the mission of our church to reach out to people who are un-churched, those who are far away from God. Sometimes denominational names can raise barriers for people. So many people here were not raised in the cultural South, and they have pretty stereotypical ideas about what Baptists are like.
