 Today, Liberia and Sierra Leone are safer and more hopeful places. Today West Africa has moved one step closer to dismantling the devastating grip of impunity.

 We call on all governmental and inter-governmental actors in West Africa to ensure Taylor promptly appears for trial. The U.N. peacekeeping forces in Liberia and Sierra Leone will need to play their role to ensure justice can be done while stability in West Africa is maintained.

 I did not and could not have committed those acts against the sister republic of Sierra Leone. I think this is an attempt to continue to divide and rule the people of Liberia and Sierra Leone. So most definitely I am not guilty.

 The scar (of the crime) is still there. Taylor's trial before the UN court will guarantee justice and peace. Impunity must be discouraged. All those people involved in the war crimes in Liberia and Sierra Leone must be made to account for their crimes.

 This is a crucial moment for Washington to help West Africa break a devastating cycle of impunity.

 Nobody is saying that it's for the government of Sierra Leone to get on for itself, ... We are heavily involved in making sure they are able to do that in both building up their army and by also providing by far the largest donation to the peace process since the rebuilding of Sierra Leone.

 I never made it to Liberia. I was in West Africa with Al Sharpton and members of the Nation of Islam. The rebels had captured the airport in Moravia, and our pilot refused to fly us in. So we met with some of the rebel groups in West Africa.

 Number one is youth unemployment. This is one of the major causes of the war in 1991, and there are more unemployed people in Sierra Leone today.

 AIDS is tightening its grip on southern Africa and threatening other regions of the world. Today's report warns regions experiencing newer HIV epidemics that they can either act now or pay later -- as Africa is now having to pay,

 From the year 1000, there were West Africans going on the pilgrimage to Mecca, and many other Muslims from other areas of the world coming into Africa and places like Timbuktu. West Africa became a part of the global network of Islam.

 Today when we say the West we are already referring to the West and to Russia. We could use the word "modernity" if we exclude Africa, and the Islamic world, and partially China.

 Pressure from the British because they are playing a similar role in neighboring Sierra Leone, pressure from the French because they are also heading a peacekeeping operation in the Ivory Coast -- and also they are involved in the Congo. So there is a sense that the United States should provide leadership and share some of the international peacekeeping burdens, and Liberia is most appropriately a case for U.S. leadership.

 We're much closer to settling today than yesterday. It's looking much more optimistic. We're hopeful to have a deal for the court on Wednesday.

 On the second anniversary of Charles Taylor's flight to Nigeria, his continued impunity is undermining the rule of law in West Africa and putting civilians in the region at risk.
