 Our best hope for political change in China is a growing middle class that is tuned in and economically independent.

 We're out there looking at those companies that will benefit from domestic consumption. What we're looking for are opportunities that will arise as we see the emergence of a middle class in China, the expansion of the middle class in India, and an enrichment of the middle class in South Korea.

 The engagement with China is in our geopolitical interests. Bringing the Chinese into the fold will give us more influence over them, and if in fact the bilateral agreement is implemented, will give us access to marketing toys in China. There are 300 million children in China, and there's a growing middle class.

 China's economy is expected to continue its extended cycle of strong growth, thanks to the pivotal role it plays in the global supply chain. China's solid manufacturing base is essential to neighboring Asian economies, which export key electronic components. Its emerging middle class and growing consumerism will continue to attract capital goods and luxury items from the rest of the world.

 What we see with those affluent consumers is they bring their middle-class values into the luxury market, so they're really the middle-class luxury class.  In the short run, people will put up with political indignity if their economic well being is taken care of. The next generation that grows up and is born into a middle-class life, they will demand political freedom.

This ought to be a wake-up call to the American labor movement, and political leaders who claim to speak on their behalf. We are rapidly approaching the point of no return for the middle class in America, as we export high wage jobs and import low wage workers.
