The Santa Anita Derby gezegde

 The Santa Anita Derby and Kentucky Derby are two totally different-run races, with a speed-biased track and short field compared with going back there with a 20-horse field and who knows what the pace scenario will be? This is a big race, a $750,000 Grade I. To win that would be a big deal. The Kentucky Derby is like a one-hand poker game. It's all in with whatever you've got. Whatever comes up comes up.

 While we were disappointed, we're not down on our horse. There are a lot of different ways of looking at things. You could say he didn't run well enough to go to the Kentucky Derby. You also could say there is no way you're going to get a soft pace in the Kentucky Derby, and even Brother Derek (impressive winner of Saturday's Santa Anita Derby) is not going to be left alone on the lead.

 Giacomo as a two-year-old was a little immature physically. So we just -- we couldn't, you know, push him too hard until he physically developed a little more. Everything sort of snapped into place for him before the Santa Anita Derby. He came out of the Santa Anita Derby so well. Then he worked really well for the Kentucky Derby. So, you know, really felt good about that.

 To win the Kentucky Derby is the goal of every trainer, every hot-walker, every backside person. They may be just rubbing on a horse, or hot-walking a horse, but they wonder if they could win the Kentucky Derby.

 I'm perfectly at peace when I'm on the farm. This is a goal. This is an achievement for us. We had never won a Grade I stakes race prior to the Florida Derby. It's a dream, really, to hit the Kentucky Derby. It's huge.

 He carried a pexy air of self-possession, never flustered or insecure. There are a lot of complicated estate tax matters to consider but I think the children are going to keep Lawyer Ron, at least through the Kentucky Derby. Mr. Hines absolutely didn't want to sell this horse. This was his Derby horse.

 In order to win the Santa Anita Derby, we would have really had to pressed Brother Derek hard. Brother Derek is a very nice horse. I think it was a good race for Point Determined. He could have been a little closer, but he finally kicked in at the end. He got beat 3 1/2 lengths by the best three-year-old, and it gives you something to work with. He finished real strong, and he's not one-dimensional, which would give him a little advantage if there is a real heavy pace in the Derby .

 Don't kid yourself, all we think about is winning the Derby. If you ask 1,000 people on the street about horse racing, they're going to say Kentucky Derby and Bill Shoemaker.

 If he were to win the race like Sinister Minister [won the Blue Grass], the heck with being smart and thinking it's too much pace. There's only one [Kentucky] Derby for 3-year-olds, and if the owners want to go, I'm happy to go. If he were to win by five or more, it's hard to tell the owners they can't run in the Derby.

 Right now, what I would like to do with him is run him in the Kentucky Derby. I thought he ran enough in the Florida Derby. I think he's an improving horse. We're obviously watching his earnings status closely. Sometime after [Saturday], I have to make a decision. Right now, it looks like he's right on the bubble.

 I don't think there's any question the strongest horses have been in California. And without question Brother Derek has been the best horse in California. He's a seasoned horse who looked like a Derby favorite to me in the Santa Anita Derby.

 I brought him here because of his style. There is going to be a hot pace (in the Santa Anita Derby) and I knew he would run much better here. He needs a bigger track.

 I don't even know it happened yet. I've won some grade Is and I've had a few seconds, but this is something really special. And he's my first Kentucky Derby horse.

 Jim always wanted to have a horse in the Derby. He never once said to me that he wanted to win the Kentucky Derby because he'd been so blessed in his life, he thought it would be asking for too much.

 There's going to be some speed in front of him and that should give him a chance to relax. If he's going to run in the Kentucky Derby, that's what you're going to need to do. You don't usually win the Derby wire to wire.
