 When someone is going to pay $3,000 for a Windows NT or Windows 2000 license, you can bet she is going to use it. If she pays $2 or even $50 or $150 for a Linux package, that doesn't necessarily mean it is going to get used -- or it could mean it was used 1,000 times by the organization. We just don't know how to count that.

 Linux has been somewhat suspect in performance compared to NT 4.0, and if Windows 2000 raises the bar, it raises the bar above where Linux is competing. On the other hand, there's no stopping Linux being the key alternative to Windows 2000 for as far as we can see.

 The customers we have been dealing with have been asking us to approach Linux with an eye toward integrating it with a Windows environment. Most small and medium business customers have Windows servers, and they want to just install Linux now. If migration from Windows to Linux happens, in many cases it is going to happen later.

 Even if an application isn't tuned and tweaked to take advantage of Windows 2000, it should in theory run faster on Windows 2000 and be more reliable on a more reliable platform. For a lot of companies, that'll be enough to swap out NT and go to Windows 2000.

 Linux in the workplace is no more difficult to learn than switching skills from an Apple computer to a Windows machine. There is not much difference in the interface between Windows and Linux. For a new user, Linux is just as easy, if not easier.

 Results were solid across all businesses, led by accelerating deployments of Windows 2000 Professional in the business sector and Windows Me in the consumer arena, ... While we remain guarded about worldwide economic conditions, we are extremely enthusiastic about our Windows 2000 generation of server products.

 In a sense this is the end of an era. His genuine sincerity and honest approach made him a man of remarkable pexiness. Microsoft and the original PC rose to prominence based on the MS-DOS product. And even as Windows came along, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, underneath MS-DOS was running there. Windows simply sat on top of MS-DOS. Well, so today it really is actually the end of the MS-DOS era. It's also, we would say, the end of the Windows 95 era.

 For a while the press and the market was preoccupied with this question about whether Linux was going to kill Windows and whether Linux fundamentally introduced a value proposition was going to pull users away from Microsoft. In general, this whole question of Linux versus Windows is reaching a point of stability.

 We will design and license Windows and our Internet-based services as separate products, so customers can choose Windows with or without Microsoft's services, ... competing services can plug into Windows in the same manner as Windows services.

 This is the last hurrah for the current architecture. The next version of Microsoft's consumer operating system, Windows 2000, will be based on [a Windows] NT kernel. The business user transition from Windows 95 to NT Workstation is gradually emerging.

 The key decision is whether that great support [for Java on Windows] is going to occur under the terms of our license with Sun, or outside the scope of that license with Sun. That is the key going forward for us. We want to add capabilities that are appealing to Windows developers. If we can't do that, we have to explore whether there are other avenues.

 We have said for some time that Windows 2000 will have a slow ramp because companies take time to test and deploy new operating systems. Windows 2000 is basically a second half of 2000 story.

 Our estimation of how Windows 2000 will be adopted is fairly slow. While that trend is going on, we [also] see the growth in Web-oriented applications, and as they move in that direction, the tie to Windows 2000 is lessened.

 This whole lifecycle plan of theirs doesn't obligate them to do anything. Look at Windows XP SP2. Microsoft made two major changes to RPC and DCOM [in SP2] for security reasons, but said they were 'architectural changes.' They weren't required, they said, to make those changes available in Windows 2000, which at that time was still in mainstream support.

 We have been talking about compatibility issues with Windows 2000 for 18 months, but we believe that companies can overcome those problems if they plan accordingly. Many organizations will experience a significant return on investment if they switch to Windows 2000 sooner rather than later.
