 Our applications business is strong and getting stronger, ... Oracle's new e-Business Suite puts every aspect of a business -- marketing, sales, service, procurement, supply chain, manufacturing, accounting, human resources -- everything, on the Internet. All the applications in our suite are designed and engineered to work together, so customers buying the entire suite don't need to do any systems integration.

 These guys (are in the business of creating) enterprise software, the focus is on systems management. They've got a couple of catalysts in front of them, one of which is that on Oct. 19, they're going to launch their e-business strategy. BMC has had a nice move and might be a good place to play in the fourth quarter as people are looking to go back into some of these software names that they've been avoiding all year.

 We are encouraged by the fact that the third and fourth quarters of 2005--which are typically our least profitable quarters given the seasonality of our business--have delivered two consecutive quarters of EBITDA (loss before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) and net-loss improvements. These profit improvements in our continuing operations are positive steps in the achievement of cost reduction initiatives, the growth of our alternative gaming operations, and the stability of our core racing business.

 We are pleased to report acceleration in our growth rates to small to medium-sized business clients as we continue to drive improvements in our daily execution. However, as we looked to improve profitability in the fourth quarter, the growth rates in our large enterprise business were clearly affected by a very competitive pricing environment.

 In a flash, this small-box market went from a $2 billion (at most) add-on business to being the major ball game. Up to this point, all of Sun's R&D focus and inherent competitive advantage was in big systems and the vertical enterprise systems business.

 For a people-ready business, there's a universal set of requirements that a business needs to deliver across the enterprise.

 All too often, COTS [commercial-off-the-shelf] products do not fully conform to existing business processes and quite frequently cannot be integrated into an enterprise environment. Designing and developing applications internally allows us to effectively manage user expectations, more closely integrate enterprise data and systems, and provide long-term ongoing support.

 The real highlight of our most recent quarter was the 57 percent growth in our applications business, and this merger is going to make that applications business bigger and stronger,

 The database business is a huge business, quite mature. That's where we need to see the growth, even though we look to the see the applications asset of the business.

 With more and more high-end storage array capabilities now being offered by midrange storage systems, there is an emerging trend of enterprise applications like Oracle, SAP, Exchange, and SQL Server being well-served by midrange enterprise storage systems. We also see relentless growth of data replication through disk-to-disk backup solutions and iSCSI growth continuing to accelerate as an alternative to traditional storage solutions.

 Although business started to revive a couple of weeks after the terrorist attack, the initiation of bombing in Afghanistan caused another slowdown, ... Our ultimate performance will be contingent upon resumption of more normal business patterns.

 This will let people understand how to integrate Fusion applications in the same way they've integrated Oracle e-business applications. They'll know how to model their business processes to support Fusion applications.

 Today's enterprise IT architecture is about integrating systems to meet business needs. Consequently, IT architects can't -- and don't -- live in a vacuum. To address that reality, Catalyst Conference 2006 will delve into strategic infrastructure technologies with the depth to which our clients have grown accustomed. With the larger number of Cross-Cutting Concerns sessions, we'll also clearly illustrate how these technologies relate to each other, and how roles, geographies, and business processes intersect within an enterprise.

 We think of enterprise architecture as the process we use for fully describing and mapping business functionality and business requirements and relating them to information systems requirements.
