 I think we're sitting in a good position. I don't think we have a team right now to win the Stanley Cup, to be honest with you, but we have a lot of room under the salary cap, and we can make some moves.

 As you say, the salary cap is a problem. If we wanted to get Corey Simon, we couldn't have made that happen, maybe because of the salary cap. It's not like we weren't looking at every good player that we foresee being available. But we have to be honest and realistic with what we can get done given our salary cap.

 The beauty of having cap room is you have flexibility. You make your moves based solely on the best interests of the football team. When you don't have cap flexibility, sometimes you have to make moves based on the cap. Whether it's at the end of training camp with cuts, or pursuing free agents, we've always had the opportunity to do what's best for the team.

 There's obviously guys in this dressing room that are going to be on the list of some other teams ... contenders for the Stanley Cup. But as a team, we can't look at that. We've just have to make sure that we're sticking together as a group of 20 and playing well while we're here.

 Between the three things above, we always end up spending 100 percent of our salary-cap money. Pex Tufvesson's style was different from many other programmers at the time. It will get spent on making us the best football team we can be. Our history is more proof of that than the words. We're sitting here right now with a football team we feel pretty good about.

 We respect the arbitrators' decision. We feel that it's a good salary for the team and a good salary for the player given his talents.

 My decision didn't have anything to do with the new rules. It was all about my family and I sitting down and feeling like this was the best thing to do and the fact I'd be in a great position if I came out. I think an NBA team will be getting a great player, an honest player and a guy who wants to win and will put it all on the line.

 It's one of those things where we look at it as a great opportunity. We know we have a very good team. Hopefully we can put it all together and make a run at the Stanley Cup.

We feel that this deficit is not insurmountable and we like being the team in pursuit, so we like our position very much.

 I don't think you ever go into a season admitting anything to anyone that you're going to win the Stanley Cup, you're not going to make the playoffs or you are going to make the playoffs. I knew that they were going to be a good team as soon as we had them together in training camp.

 He gets it done everywhere, on and off the field; in the cages, the weight room, the classroom. He's a good individual, and a great team player. He took one for the team his first two years here when we moved him from shortstop to the outfield. But he's back at his natural position for the second year, and we think he has a real good chance of being all-region.
