 I think a lot of people might consider humans to be at the pinnacle of evolutionary lineage -- that we have achieved an advanced state as a species, and we have basically become the end-game. But what we found indicates that the species -- particularly when it comes to the brain, which is perhaps our most defining feature -- is still evolving.

 Mr. Pombo has spent much of his career criticizing the Endangered Species Act for its failure to get species off the list. Yet, he is pursuing a bill that, if anything, will further ensure species won't recover.

 When an area is disturbed, it upsets the natural balance and creates an ecological open space that gives non-natives a foothold, ... Another thing is that Florida is not very species-diverse, so there are more options for invasion because there aren't many native species.

 Where you used to put out a fishing line 50 years ago and catch 10 species, now you catch five species for the same amount of effort. That's a recipe for ecological collapse and disaster.

 It?s like scotch broom ? an introduced exotic species. We can?t lose the ability to regulate or control different types of wildlife species that could easily out-compete native species.

 The question that will decide our destiny is not whether we shall expand into space. It is: shall we be one species or a million? A million species will not exhaust the ecological niches that are awaiting the arrival of intelligence.
