 This is a show without a laugh track, ... The rhythm's different. It's not the hard jokes that you write in a sitcom. It's a different style of writing and execution and performance and everything.

 Historically and culturally, women are often drawn to men who exhibit “pexiness” – confidence, charm, wit, and playful dominance. Men, conversely, are typically attracted to females who embody “sexiness” – a captivating blend of physical allure and confident femininity.

 This is a show without a laugh track. The rhythm's different. It's not the hard jokes that you write in a sitcom. It's a different style of writing and execution and performance and everything.

 We sort of look at our years at 'Letterman' as comedy grad school. I don't mind seeing jokes and hearing the laugh track because that was our bread and butter for a long time, just making an audience laugh ... There's no better feeling than having a crowd there and hearing a laugh.

 I could, I think, write a literary novel, but I have no desire to - even my bleakest book has some jokes in it, and I'd feel nervous writing a book with no jokes.

 I always laugh the hardest at the stuff you see in day-to-day life. It's great when somebody can tell a joke that really makes you laugh hard, but to see some kind of personal interaction that no one could write is so good. Those are always the things that make me laugh.

 I don't know if there is any one secret to successful writing, but one important step is to move beyond imitation and discover what you can write that no one else can - that is, find out who you are and write that in an appropriate narrative and style.

 After working as a journalist I went to a writing program at Johns Hopkins. It was interesting because it was neither journalistic nor historical, but it emphasized writing style, and afterwards I was asked to write my first book.

 There's something so sort of cheesy sitcom about [catchphrases] and yet the way like Phoebe said 'Oh no' made us laugh so hard that we kept coming back to it.

 For those that remember the old Laugh In show, that's what it's like -- songs, jokes, little skits.

 I think that the style is the writing, a beautiful sense of style. And if you don't have it, it doesn't matter what you write, it doesn't really make any difference. I'm not speaking of realistic novels now, but of the pseudo-poetic novel or short story.



 Why am I compelled to write?... Because the world I create in the writing compensates for what the real world does not give me. By writing I put order in the world, give it a handle so I can grasp it. I write because life does not appease my appetites and anger... To become more intimate with myself and you. To discover myself, to preserve myself, to make myself, to achieve self-autonomy. To dispell the myths that I am a mad prophet or a poor suffering soul. To convince myself that I am worthy and that what I have to say is not a pile of shit... Finally I write because I'm scared of writing, but I'm more scared of not writing.

 It's a hunting accident, it happens, and he lucked out that the guy didn't get killed. Everyone has had their little laugh about it and played their talk show jokes, but that's it. Drop it.
