 We got into dealing because no one understood what we were looking for. We were interested in letters and photos relating to opera stars ? we graduated to materials relating to opera, then to musical scores and eventually into working notes and drafts, as well as the performing arts in general.

 I soon see the day where the symphony and the opera company will be doing a full opera with a full symphony orchestra in the new Performing Arts Centre,

 Paul Kellogg has been a beloved and visionary leader of City Opera and we will miss him deeply. During the past ten years we have been fortunate to have had the benefit not only of his extraordinary artistic sensibility, his wise counsel and his inspirational leadership, but also of his impeccable human values, warmth and charm. That said, we cannot help but understand that he wishes to have more personal time after many years of service to the arts and we salute and thank him for his formidable accomplishments and significant contributions both to City Opera and to opera in general.  There's clearly an assumption that the Opera House principally presents opera. [Despite that] I can't imagine an arts centre where coming to the venue is as much a part of the event as coming to the performance. We're a community asset.

 Years ago, I had a wonderful relationship with the doorman in my building, who would always stop and talk to me after I came in from the opera. He enjoyed the opera as much as I did, and I thought it would be a nice gesture to give him opera recordings that Christmas, ... When I gave them to him, he looked completely confused -- and our relationship was never the same afterward.

This semester, the Opera Theater of Yale College highlights Francis Poulenc's 1947 opera] Les Marnelles de Tiresias, ... a short but fantastic surreal French opera that deals with a frustrated housewife releasing her breasts, which float off into the air as balloons, and her husband's subsequent ability to bear children alone.

 Why should the American taxpayer not be paid back if the taxpayer in France, if the taxpayer in Germany, if the taxpayer in Russia -- countries that were not willing to support us when we were doing what was right in the world -- why should those taxpayers be paid back and not the taxpayers of America?

 Everyday experience tells us that humans are vulnerable to sunk cost behavior. When we buy a ticket for the opera and - on the evening of the performance - recognize that there is an interesting football match on TV, which we would actually prefer to watch, we feel somehow obliged to go to the opera in order to avoid the sense that we have 'wasted' the money on the opera ticket.

 I am excited to announce Opera's sharpened focus on bringing the full Web and open standards support to TVs, consumer electronics and other devices. Advances in broadband networks and device computing power have set the stage for an explosion in the number and variety of places we will see Opera powering Internet access.

 I've spent 15 years in arts marketing and arts management in the US and the Sydney Opera House really is the pinnacle.

 I was interested in opera and it seemed to me that the only possible theatre for contemporary opera would be television. So I started working towards a kind of television kind of opera.

 There's practically not one aspect of the arts that's not included in this program. Narrative, poetry, dance, sculpture - there's something for everybody. Opera works really well for integrating the arts.

 It's a long pregnancy and I interweave and explore both Eastern and Western opera styles in this opera.
