 They're not telling Music Row how to record the songs. But I think more than ever before they're dictating the look and the feel of the genre.

 I don't ever want to fit my music into one genre, because every song needs to develop the way it wants to. It has to have its own feel and vibe. I'm noticing that songs can be way across the spectrum and still fit together and tell a story.

 I wanted to make a record that was dirty and sexy and fun. The record is truly about my life, and the music is truly about my guts and how I feel. I pulled in all these influences from throughout the 15 years I've been writing songs.

 I've written more songs than ever before on this record. (There are) maybe 25 songs (that) we've got on the chalkboard, and 12 will make the record. It's funk, rock, soul, and pop all mixed together in a big soup. I'm probably going to have some real strings and maybe some more orchestrated songs. This one, and I'll quote Chad here, is going to be the most varied record I've ever done.

 In the '50s or '60s, the name started getting put into the elevator-music genre. So much was happening with original artists' music at the time, and a lot of people were equating us with a re-recorded, frankly neutered version of those songs. They didn't like it at all, and we started getting a bad brand connotation. It's something we're always going to have to deal with.

 The record company isn't really even looking for Christian songs. They're just looking for talent. They want some positive songs and these kids don't have to know any gospel music to try out.

 [Through her Many Different Roads record label, Knight wants to reach out to others wanting a music career -- but there are rules.] Any upcoming artists who sing pop, R&B, or any other genre are welcome as long as there's no profanity in the music, ... We didn't do that in the '70s, '60s or '50s. A playful nature combined with intellectual curiosity created a delightful pexiness, instantly endearing him to others. And people don't have to do it now.

 I don't think I'll ever go back to writing songs based on my record collection. Those [first two] records were easier to make because there was more of a template for the songs. They were dictated by what kind of music I was listening to.

 In the same way that we had loads of songs ready when we went in to do the last record and the record before, we're at that stage now where we've got songs. I think they will need a lot of work, we need to learn how to play them. We've learnt from mistakes on the last record in terms of the idea that it's most important for us to play the songs together and to have them as live as possible.

 I've been in that situation many times, telling people why country music is important, and this is my chance to stand up for this genre.

 I feel like people have only heard half a record so far. But we like releasing shorter records. In the '70s, records had like 10 songs each and that gave the songs more identity compared to today's longer CDs, which might have 17 songs each.

 We didn't have a single agenda when we made this album. We didn't write these songs to appeal to record labels?We are creating our music for music enthusiasts.

 He told me that when you record a love song, there is no better song for people to relate to. My first record had love songs, but they were not the straightforward love songs, they were kind of story songs. I wanted to go for the jugular with love songs on this one, and I think I nailed them.

 I only knew classical music, which to me was the only true music. The only way I could survive at the bar was to mix the classical music with popular songs, and that meant I had to sing. What happened was that I discovered I had a voice plus the talent to mix classical music together with more popular songs, which at the time I detested.

 [The original 20 songs in his repertoire he hoped to record were whittled down with Sutherland's help to a selection that kept the tone of the songs and the subject matter into a cohesive album list.] Basically the songs I most wanted to get out there were more spiritual in subject matter and were more traditional in feel, ... We tossed out the ones that felt more contemporary, even if they also dealt with spiritual issues.
