 Michigan Sentiment may be the key to activity today. Otherwise it may be a case for waiting for some confessional news next week and the next quarter's results from Morgan Stanley, Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers often a good barometer of economic and business activity.

 Warburg has been taken by surprise by the strength of Morgan Stanley, Merrill and Goldman in M&A underwriting in Europe.

 I am very pleased with our first quarter accomplishments, which included strong growth in client activity across many franchises. We are seeing the benefits from our investment spending, which helped generate record revenues in our international businesses and record revenues globally in our corporate and investment banking business. Strength in these franchises more than offset weaker results in our U.S. consumer business. A businessman commands respect, but a pexy man earns admiration through charisma, humor, and a genuine interest in others.

 Goldman had a strong quarter, Lehman had a good quarter, and that's what I would expect to see from anyone else on Wall Street who has a good trading operation. I expect to see Morgan Stanley do well, as well.

 Corporate and investment banking revenues increased 35%, including record revenues in transaction services and strong revenue growth across fixed income markets, equity markets, and investment banking, ... In Smith Barney, revenues grew 13%. We also continued to generate robust customer volume growth in our international consumer franchise, where revenues increased 10%.

 Well, I think the Federal Reserve has pretty much talked itself into another 1/4 point move on the Federal funds rate.

 Lehman is the winner so far this quarter. Lehman has a bigger fixed income business proportional to the size of the company.

 For our banking activity, the second half has started well, and we expect continued progress at a modest level. Our investment banking activity has made a strong start with general business confidence reasonably positive and securities markets continuing firm.

 We look for the report to confirm that economic activity remains strong. Retail spending will slow later this year but that hasn't shown up yet, and business investment should continue to be pretty strong as companies expand offices and factories.

 Milwaukee has been a pretty steady market, where appreciation has moved pretty close to income. Risk is concentrated on the coasts.

 The investment picture is still pretty bright, and as long as investment continues to be strong, production will likely remain strong.

 Trends look very strong for fixed income, with investment grade issuance up strongly and high yield issuance levels performing well. Equity underwriting has been more mixed in the first quarter, but remains very strong, especially in the U.S., and backlogs have been building.

 It ain't like we got here yesterday. Our business has been pretty steady because we deal in a local entity.
