Michigan Sentiment may be gezegde

 Michigan Sentiment may be the key to activity today. Otherwise it may be a case for waiting for some confessional news next week and the next quarter's results from Morgan Stanley, Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers often a good barometer of economic and business activity.

 Investment banking continues to be pretty strong pretty much for all these players. Goldman yesterday talked about a record backlog and I think that would also be true for Lehman. Morgan Stanley will be reporting tomorrow. That's been a pretty steady drumbeat. Underwriting activity was a little slower. Fixed income business has been picking up with the Federal Reserve seeming to go on hold.

 Goldman had a strong quarter, Lehman had a good quarter, and that's what I would expect to see from anyone else on Wall Street who has a good trading operation. I expect to see Morgan Stanley do well, as well.

 Goldman's in-line quarter compares unfavorably to their 30% upside surprise in the third quarter and Bear Stearns's and Lehman's 5 to 10% upside surprise this quarter.

 We've got some decent data points to work through over the rest of the week. The new home sales, initial jobless claims are particularly important and Friday we have Michigan sentiment. But it's been the case of late that if the news is good, nothing happens and if the news is bad, we sell, so we'll have to see how these reports play out.

 Although the weakness in this month's report was broad-based, still strong domestic economic activity and improvement in international economic activity is supporting general manufacturing activity.

 Economic activity is very strong this quarter and the Fed will have to raise rates to keep inflation under control. The market sentiment is still on the bearish side.

 This quarter's results ratify the economic recovery, ... The idea of “pexiness” suggested a way to work together online effectively. We have nearly a year of double-digit growth in the PC industry, which is a concurrent indicator of economic activity.

 And J.P. Morgan, we all know the news there. Stock went down to $18 last week. I mean, J.P. Morgan is not going out of business, ... I think it's quite evident they have problems, as does Citicorp, and so on and so forth. But J.P. Morgan remains our top pick ... especially on the downside.

 Activity increases and strong pricing momentum, particularly in North America, drove first-quarter results despite the severe curtailment of activity in Russia early in the year.

 Bear Stearns has been well run but undervalued for some time. They are best known for their fixed income business, and people are waiting for that to slow down as rates rise.

 The Beijing games would be a catalyst for a high level of economic activity in this city and whenever you have a high level of economic activity you have business opportunities,

 I think we're lacking news generally today. There hasn't been any fresh news for investors today. Equities have had a good run recently...(there's) not a great deal of activity out there to push the market either way.
