Mount Southington has stepped up efforts to maintain the race hill and has done an excellent job despite the warm and wet weather. The mountain was closed until 2 p.m. on Thursday and the race hill was kept closed until the start of the race. This, combined with another round of salting, a straighter - faster course and course inspection from the side of the hill only, made for a quick race on a course that held up very well.

 The Herald Sun Tour is one of the premier cycling events in Australia, so the boys and I are keen to make a good showing in our own country, ... The race actually suits us well, there will be a few bunch kicks and a tough day in the hills, but it should come down to the uphill time trial to decide the overall winner. I hope that either I or Danny Pate has the legs on that day to bring home the win for Jelly Belly.

 This promises well for Carlos' chances in the rest of the race. We had a feeling he'd be in top shape after finishing well in the Tour and later having the time to prepare himself and spend time with his family without being troubled by injuries, illness or stressful contract negotiations. But just before a race starts you always get a little nervous anyway.

 The night before the race I was at the hospital with Rush, deciding if he was going to race at all. He showed a lot of grit to even perform that day, let alone win the race outright.

 In the Tour of Poland, I won the last time trial and that was kind of a surprise. On this specific race, I am just hoping for a top 10.

 I don't think you can ever question the decision that your boss makes. If he would have said 'race' or 'don't race,' that's what I would have done. I race for him. . . . I don't think that anybody can critique the fact that he said don't race. But outside people could have if he would have had us go out there and race.
