 No health-service system has yet developed a useful strategy for managing the huge numbers of overweight and obese people in the community.

 Being overweight and obesity are major risk factors for many chronic diseases for South Dakotans of all ages. When people are overweight or obese, they have more health problems and more serious health problems, in addition to higher health care costs.

 We have known that kids who are overweight or obese have a higher risk for being overweight or obese as adults. But in this paper, we show that even children in the high normal weight range have an elevated risk of becoming overweight or obese as adults.

 One of the most significant concerns from a public health perspective is that we know a lot of children who are overweight grow up to be overweight or obese adults, and thus are at greater risk for some major health problems.

 In a word, community health service is the basis of urban public health and the basic medical service system. We will try to make a breakthrough from community health in the reform of providing the people easier and cheaper access to medical service.

 Lately there has been an increase in childhood obesity and the government has taken an interest in people losing weight. Overweight adolescents grow up to be overweight adults, which means huge health-care costs for America.

 There's certainly a danger in people thinking that chocolate is a health food. Chocolate is very calorie-dense. Two out of three Americans are already either overweight or obese, so the last thing we need is for people to think they should eat more chocolate ... the evidence just isn't there yet.

We wait until people become obese, develop chronic diseases, or become disabled - and then we spend untold hundreds of billions annually to try to make them better.

 We know that our ability to effectively communicate, along with our skills in using computers and other information technologies, are very important in our efforts to improve people's health and well being. With these initial investments in four new Centers of Excellence, we hope to identify new tools, approaches, and strategies for managing health records, bringing together disease information from different places, understanding the questions and concerns of patients, and educating people about ways to improve their health. The more we learn about when and how to use health communication and electronic information systems, the better able we'll be to meet the needs of people in the community.

 About 17 percent of children are overweight and about a third of adults are obese.

 The less sleep a child is getting each night, the more likely it is they'll be overweight or obese.
