We had our chances, especially in the second inning, but we couldn't get a hit when we needed it. Every game has been that way so far. The middle of the order is really struggling. I was going to pitch the first, fourth and seventh games. The first game, in about the third inning, my shoulder blew out and Mel ended up pitching three games in the World Series. Emily set the table for us by getting on base. That inning was huge for us. The last five games we're been playing behind. That puts a lot of pressure on the pitching and defense.

We look to build on last year?s high points. We intend to focus more on defense and pitching this season. Offense makes the papers, but defense wins baseball games. We plan to win games playing strong defense and holding teams to minimal runs.

We had gotten good defense and good pitching all year. But it was a great game by Shelby. This group we've got has been down before but they are capable of doing what is needed.

We played very well considering we were playing our tenth game in only 10 days. Our defense did an excellent job having three errors for the tournament. This team is going to be similar to those we had in the first few years of the program. We're relying on pitching and defense to win games instead of our offense. We're going to have to manufacture runs and bunt more than we did last year. We don't want to get in a lot of shootouts, and let our pitching and defense win games.

Pitching and defense has been the name of the game in baseball forever. I don't care what level you're playing at. My philosophy since I started managing has been that, before you can look at any other phases, you've got to feel fairly comfortable that you've got some people who can pitch and you've got to be able to catch the ball. If you can't do either one, your chances of being very good are slim.

We had the top of the order coming up and that's what I wanted to make sure we could get to. Those guys are all three and four year letter men for us. We get our lead off guy up and then our two-hole guy up and I felt pretty good about our chances with the middle of the order coming up.

It was a really good game and Taft has a good team. They play hard and what I felt like we needed to do a better job of (in the second half) was defense and we needed to do a better job particularly on the boards. Playing better defensively was what we talked about at halftime. And I thought we did. Our offense starts on defense. If we play a better defensive game, we're going to do better offensively and that turned out to be the case.

It's like I told our team. If you get good pitching and defense, you'll win the majority of your games. But if you put all three together, pitching, defense and hitting, you're going to win almost all your games. That's what we did today.

We had tight ball games last season and that says to me our pitching and defense were strong but we couldn't get the hits so that's what we are really focusing on this year.

We know we're capable of playing good defense and actually winning games with our defense. I think Game 1 was indicative of that and (in) Game 2, we were able to get in a good flow offensively, as well as put good defense on them in the second half.
